Well what do you think so far about March madness. It seems like there just isn't the excitment this year. The second day of the first round was fun, but it seems like every game is a blow out. I hope the final 8 can give us a show.

March Madness really hasn't been that exciting in terms of upsets. Duke is really the only "Giant" that was slayed early on. (Should have lost in 1st rd) With the advancement into quality teams as we get towards the Final Four I think we may seem some more competitive games.

At least I hope so.

Yes, it's been pretty lame overall. I'd bet the ratings are bad too, sucks for you CBS.

Well, this "tourne(a)ment" compared to past "tourne(a)ments" is not very comparable. Not much drama from this bunch.

All four #1's to the Final Four, that's a first...I only picked all four to the Final Four once and that year three made it. Didn't pick it in either pool this year...although in my family pool I picked 3 of 4. Need UCLA to fall on their face in that one.

I thought KU was going to crap that down their leg at the end.

In an effort to avoid allowing Dumbass Dwight to take yet another thread hostage, I'll go ahead and pick North Carolina and Memphis for the finals.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see how the Final Four plays out when it actually IS the four best teams left with no Cinderellas joining the party.

One thing's for sure -- it will be the last basketball worth watching until next college basketball season...unless we get a Celtics-Lakers NBA final.

Creighton or Nebraska could've gotten hot and tore this tourney field up!

Frankly, I don't think either team would've faired well against any of the #1's with the exception of maybe Kansas.

Both Nebraska and Creighton were streaky. If they got hot, they could play with anybody. The guard trio from CU and the whole lineup for NU were capable of igniting a fire that was tough to contain. North Carolina, Memphis, UCLA and KU do all rate several notches ahead of the Jays and the Skers.

I just think a hot streak could've taken either team to the Sweet 16.

I just have a question. In another thread, I saw someone reference Memphis as a mid-major program, and I guess I just don't see that. I get that they are not out of one of the big conferences, often referred to as the BCS conferences even for basketball, but I just don't liken Memphis to a mid-major. Am I wrong about that?

They are what, C-USA? I'd consider them mid-major.

You just mean in general as a program you don't attribute them to a mid-major?

Exactly. Given the success of the program, I just find it hard to call them a mid-major. I understand the whole conference thing, but at some point, don't you have to remove them from the conversation as a traditional mid-major in basketball?

I see your point. I kind of do the same thing with them and Gonzaga in my mind on one level. Yet, I still typically will refer to them as mid-majors. I guess the way I usually put it is that they are the Duke/UNC's of the mid-major programs.

On a parallel note, I definitely agree with you on the football side of things...say with schools, for purely an objective example, like App. St.

I know that in football at least a mid major conference is a conference that doesn't get an automatic bid to a BCS Bowl game. And in general, the reason is the level of play within the conference.

Now, my question would be what criteria do they use to determine the barometer for which conference is a mid major or a major conference?

I did find this on the NCAA website: "The term "mid-major" was originally coined by the sports media and has no official status."

Any takers?

It's a bit subjective, there are endless debates on it, but in my opinion the driving factors are conference and funding available to the program.
