| It makes me wonder if this *potential* (not official yet) one year contract extension is simply a maneuver to position themselves to have leverage in negotiations with potential defectors (Rivera, Posada, A-Rod). |

Update: Torre turned it down. Good to see. I like Torre and he shouldn't of had to take a performance-based pay cut. Should be interesting to see who they give the reigns to and if Torre goes somewhere else or retires. He'll get better offers from other teams for sure. |

First, I'm kind of surprised Torre was offered a deal. I believe it was for the reason you suggested -- A-Rod, Posada and Mariano Rivera want Torre there.
Second, I'm NOT shocked Torre turned it down. But it's funny how this might play out. Now, Yankee brass can say "We wanted him back, but he didn't want to come". The organization is trying to come out of this smelling like roses. But there's one problem -- Steinbrenner (through his stupid comments) already took a dump in the rose garden, so it smells like sh1t.
I think Torre needs to leave the Yanks. He's a good manager, but not sure how inspiring he is anymore. I'd put someone with some more fire at the helm. How about Larry Bowa in pinstripes? That would be entertaining.

After acknowledging that he was desperate, Dwight said "people will resort to saying things they know aren't true when they are desperate." That about sums it up! |

Actually, I agree we need someone with some more fire...which, really, anyone would meet that criteria...Torre is extremely lax, but that's his style.
Personally, I'd like to see LaRussa. I am not too excited about Mattingly (Torre-lite) and I am not sure Girardi ready to tackle the task of the Yankees. I think LaRussa may still lack a little fire, but he's an excellent guy and can handle it. |

| LaRussa was on Dan Patrick's show this morning. Said he hadn't been contacted by the Yanks. Danced around whether he'd be interested. He did say some rather unflattering things about the NY media, leading me to believe he wouldn't want to subject himself or his family to such a thing, but that's just my speculation based on what he said. |

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see him stay in St. Louis...he's got the perfect the gig there. He's absolutely right about NY media...quite frankly, being the Yankee Skipper may be the most stressful job in NY.

Joe Torre deserved better than to be treated like that by the Yankees. Guess the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree with the Steinbrenner progeny. |

"Well, smell it." (snort, sniff) "It has absolutely no smell whatsoever!" "It's good! Put it back! Somebody is saving it. It'll turn up in something." Thats what frightens me. This tactic by the Yankees has similar attributes to the token deal offered to Schottenheimer before he got canned. In this case, I whole heartedly agree with Vranged. It was a ploy to make the Yankee organization "look good" by Torrie leaving on his own, vs. them firing him. But I don't think it will work like they think.
Long-shot maybe, but could Willie Randolph wind up a Yankee once again? I know this year was a trainwreck for the Mets, but he did have some success in turning that club around last year.
I'm not a baseball freak, so I could be totally full of sh!t here. |

I think the next manager will be Mattingly or Girardi. I don't see LaRussa being calm enough to handle it. I will be curious to see where Torre winds up (back in St. Louis? Seattle? retirement?). But tactics like this are why people really dislike the Yankees. Joe Torre is and has always been, a class act. He's taken them to the playoffs in each of his 12 years. But they're arrogant and ignorant enough to consider a 94-win season (with that patchwork pitching staff) a failure. |

Mattingly and Girardi and the obvious media favorites.
LaRussa not calm enough? He's not Torre, but he's conversely not Lasorda. That comment really doesn't make sense to me after following him for over 10 years in St. Louis. |

I saw on ESPN there is a press conference today for Torre at 2 EST. Makes me wonder if the Yankees realized that it could be the most damaging thing in the world to let him go right now and that a $5M offer was a slap in the face.
Waiting to see what that's all about though... |

They lowball Torre. And yet Cashman gets a free pass for the Yankees "failure." |

Do you think that Steinbrenner will ever come to the conclusion, after the Yankees go 70-92 next year and don't even make the playoffs, that maybe they should've offered Torre mo' money? Steinbrenner's death is the only thing that can make the Yankees a World Series contender again. The greedy old geezer is to that team what Al Davis is to the team formerly known as the Oakland Raiders. |

I think Davis is much more manipulative and hands on. I think Steinbrenner blows more hot air than anything. And, in fairness, Steinbrenner's Yankees have maintained competativeness whereas Oakland fans have to be doing witchcraft at this point to hope Al dies. I don't see the next Yankees coach making in more than a few seasons. Sounds like Torre isn't looking back...he'll be signed somewhere in a hurry and LaRussa is back in St. Louis. I don't see any other coach being able to do what Torre has done there. |
