NU marketing director leaves to take job with corporation
BY LEE BARFKNECHT
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

LINCOLN — The Nebraska athletic department's director of marketing has resigned to take a job with Alltel in Charlotte, N.C.

Jason Rathe, who has worked in the marketing office for six years, said he hopes to return to NU someday. He is a Nebraska City native, he holds two degrees from Nebraska and his wife is former Husker track and field All-American Kim Stewart.

"This was a really tough decision leaving Nebraska," Rathe said Thursday. "We're both from here and love the Huskers.

"It was just the right move for my career at this time. I'm hoping to come back. My main goal is to be back at Nebraska. I love it here, and there are great people here. It's a great place to work."

Rathe, in his marketing role at Nebraska, has worked closely with local Alltel representatives.

He now will work for Alltel with athletic teams from Duke, North Carolina State, Clemson, Virginia and the Carolina Panthers.

Since February, Nebraska athletics has had people leave the following positions:

Associate athletic director for major gifts (Paul Meyers); associate A.D. for marketing (Paul Miles); director of marketing (Rathe); coordinator of sports nutrition (James Harris); head football trainer (Doak Ostergard); and assistant trainer for reconditioning (Derek Clark).

Also, Executive Associate A.D. Marc Boehm is considered a strong candidate for the athletic director's job at Pittsburgh.

Well in fairness, he IS a marketing director who needs a solid product to push.

For guys who are fans of two of the few "major" college football programs in a worse position than Nebraska (i.e. Notre Dame and Iowa), you sure like to cast a lot of stones in your glass houses.

After acknowledging that he was desperate, Dwight said "people will resort to saying things they know aren't true when they are desperate." That about sums it up!

Vranged, you're right, that was pretty weak of me, but when joy comes to you, you just gotta roll with it.

I've accepted the less than mediocre happenings in Iowa City this year. Ah, hell, who are we kidding.....the downright disaster in Iowa City.

Life sucks, and I was taught from a young age that when things don't go your way, find something that makes the pain go away.

Fair enough. I guess we're in Nebraska (I think you're in Nebraska), so the Huskers should be expected to be a target more than other teams. I just don't get caught up in the misery of other programs. I actually want Iowa to do well. I think college football is more exciting when Notre Dame is good.

You know me -- I'm always positive (??).

I don't actually like seeing Nebraska in turmoil, but I grew up 50 miles east of the Missouri river and growing up all the Nebraska hoopla got really old, ie the b!tching and moaning, etc. And that was for a 9-1 season.

I actually lived in Omaha during the 94-95 seasons and it was actually pretty exciting at the time.

I joke alot, but it's because of Steve Peterson and how he has taken a premium program and essentially flushed it, IMO.

The solice for you guys is that you aren't paying your coach 2.8MM for sh!tty results.
