Hawks sad to see NU lose Meyers
BY LEE BARFKNECHT
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

Howard Hawks, a University of Nebraska regent and one of the Husker athletic department's bigger benefactors, spoke in glum tones Thursday about the resignation of Associate Athletic Director Paul Meyers.

"This is very unfortunate for Nebraska-Lincoln," Hawks said. "Paul has done a great job. His departure will leave a big hole.

"It will be very difficult to replace him — if that's their plan; I don't know their plan — with someone of his caliber."

Meyers, in charge of major gifts to Husker athletics, said Thursday that he has resigned after 13 years with the school's development office.

"I'm not going to make any public comments," he said. "I'll just let whatever release comes out from the athletic department speak for itself."

The former three-sport star at Omaha Westside said he will stay in the Omaha area, but is undecided on his career plans.

Hawks predicted Meyers won't be out of work long.

"He's not going to have a hard time finding something good to do," Hawks said. "If the question about Paul is, 'What kind of guy is he?' the answer is, 'Outstanding.'

"He is a class act all the way, as everyone who has ever dealt with him knows."

Nebraska Athletic Director Steve Pederson now has seen two "cabinet members" depart in the past seven months. Associate A.D. for marketing Paul Miles, a Pederson hire and former NU football player, resigned in the spring.

Pederson, in a statement, said: "(Meyers) is a good man and had success as a student-athlete, coach and administrator at the University of Nebraska. We thank him for all his contributions."

Meyers, a former Husker baseball All-American, has been a popular figure with many prominent boosters of Nebraska athletics. Among them are Charles Myers, who gave $5 million to the new football facility in 2004, and former NU baseball player Darin Erstad, who donated $1 million.

Hawks said he was "pretty much" surprised by Meyers' resignation.

"It's going to take awhile to get things built up in that area back to Paul's caliber," Hawks said. "He'll definitely be missed."

While in school at Nebraska, Meyers earned first-team All-America honors in 1986 as an outfielder. In his three-year NU career, he hit .350 with 36 homers, 209 RBIs, 250 hits and 60 stolen bases.

He was a fourth-round pick of the San Francisco Giants and played in their minor-league system before shoulder problems ended his pro career.

Meyers returned to Lincoln as a Nebraska assistant baseball coach before joining the development office in 1994. In 2000, he was named development office director. In 2005, he was named the associate A.D. for development, and earlier this year he became associate A.D. for major gifts.

When HOWARD HAWKS makes a statement like - "It will be very difficult to replace him — if that's their plan; I don't know their plan — with someone of his caliber."

It makes you wonder what Meyers saw or didn't like that caused him to bail. From what I have seen Meyers was closer to the major boosters than Stevie P.

Dollar for dollar Paul Meyers brought more money into the University than anyone in the last few years.

I expect at some point for something to leak out pertaining to his decision to leave.

From what I have heard from friends in Lincoln that have ties to the University, Paul's departure was not something that had been planned.

Fundraising at NU has taken a "Giant" step backwards, it might not ever recover.

My guess it that he and Stevie got along really well.

I wonder if Danny Nee might be in line to replace him. Word is, he was/is looking for a position within the program to help raise money -- something he could be exceptionally good at. When he left Lincoln, his beef was with Bill Byrne, and not the University. In fact, when he sued for sums he thought were due to him after getting fired, he didn't even name UNL as a Defendant in the lawsuit -- he named Bill Byrne individually, which I found rather peculiar. Apparently, he didn't want to completely burn that bridge. If it's still standing, I wouldn't be surprised if Nee gets a job with fund-raising duties.

After acknowledging that he was desperate, Dwight said "people will resort to saying things they know aren't true when they are desperate." That about sums it up!

This story flew under the radar with the Mizzou debacle.
I wonder if ol' Pederspin was half glad for what happened in Columbia to distract from this story.

"Perhaps the worst thing that can happen is to reach into the refrigerator and come out with something that you cannot identify at all. You literally do not know what it is. Could be meat, could be cake. Usually, at a time like that, I'll bluff. "Honey, is this good?" "Well, what is it?" "I don't know. I've never seen anything like it. It looks like...meatcake!" "Well, smell it." (snort, sniff) "It has absolutely no smell whatsoever!" "It's good! Put it back! Somebody is saving it. It'll turn up in something." Thats what frightens me. That someone will consider it a challenge and use it just because it's in there." -- George Carlin

I've heard that the info on why he left will come out soon, and it's going to make things pretty uncomfortable for SP.

It seems like everyone on message boards has an inside source. Well, here's mine. I'm told by someone with close ties to the program that he was asked to leave, but allowed the "dignity" of being allowed to resign. I didn't get the impression that it was anything negative in Steve Pederson's direction -- but more on Paul Meyers. I guess we'll find out.

There are rumors going around that two more in the AD are going to resign, FWIW.

What I get from this thread that jumped off the laptop at me is how guys like you Dukester & Logan can waste so much energy studying the enemy. I am anti Iowa and anti ND, so what little I get comes from the national press or from you guys here. Why do you read so deep into a program of athletics from a school that you literally hate?

Shhh... "My Bluejay insider sez Rodney Buford is getting black balled by the NBA because he is near his pension cut off and is a marginal player." Your gossip isn't even worthy of reading. Save it V!

Buford actually told that to me himself, so there was no source or gossip there. Might have been a desperate reach (you should be familiar with that, Dwight) by Buford, but it was said nonetheless. I'm just saying what this Husker guy told me.

Hey Dwight -- remember when you said that I was the "undeniable king of the Big Sports message board" back in the day? Those were your exact words.

Well, as king, I'm ordering you to stop embarrassing yourself. Stop trying to make comebacks to your king; it's not working.

I'm tired of your mouth. I am coming to Omaha on October 26th. I am not threatened you physically. I simply have never witnessed a mouthy scum spew so much BS. I would welcome the opportunity to allow you to utter your junk in person. Well?

And V, you can mangle and twist the intent any which way you do. It isn't about dissecting or conquering. It's about you backing up your words. You are very bold. I challenge you to bring that audacious persona to reality...well?
