Southern Miss (-20.5) over Rice...Southern Miss has been on the road for 3 straight games and are coming back home to play their first real home game against a Division 1 opponent. So the fans and players excitement factor should be extra high for tonight's nationally televised game. Rice is coming into this game averaging 53 points. And that's not 53 points on offense, that's giving up 53 points on defense! This team has only 6 starters returning on a defense that even last season was giving up 33 points a game and were outgained by 28 ypg. Virtually every team they have played this year has gotten their season high Division 1 points total on this Rice defense. Even Baylor scored more on this defense than they did the next week against Texas State (who?). Southern Miss is no offensive juggernaut. But they'll look that way tonight against the Rice Crispy's. Southern Miss is 10-1 ATS at home against poor defenses that give up 425+ yards or more a game. SM returns 8 players on defense, which is the most that they've returned in a long time. And last time they had that many they gave up only 15 ppg. This year they have been scored on, but it's been on the road against the likes of Tennessee and Boise St., who have much stronger offenses than this Rice team. When SM goes into league play, those points allowed will go way down starting tonight. With the departure of coaches in recent years this Rice team is in their third offensive system in three years. And with the exception of playing against a very bad Texas Tech defense, most of their points have been scored after the damamge has already been done. Texas was up 41-7 at half to this team. And 55-7 after the third quarter. But the Horns basically pulled all of their first units out after the second quarter. And poor Baylor has never looked so good this year than when they played this Rice team. In fact, as bad as the Big 12 is this year, your in pretty bad shape when this conference is beating up on you. And did I say Rice also lost to 1AA Nicholls State in their only other non-Big 12 game? The bad news for Rice is that defenses don't improve over the year like offenses do. Hear me now and believe me later, their still bad! Southern Miss isn't. And they have historically bounced back strong the next game after a loss. I expect the same tonight. Southern Miss will be yet another team that will get their season high points total tonight.
