I caught a short part of the show today where DeShawn Jackson was complaining that the Ex Huskers from the NC era aren't given free tickets and free hotel stays to attend a NC celebration in Lincoln. I may have some of this wrong, but aren't y'all tired of all this whining from the ex players? |

I believe it's Vershawn Jackson Crit - anyways yes I am tired of hearing about it. Most of them cats hate Callahan merely because he doesn't do things the way Osborne & Solich did. Get over it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Vershawn wasn't much of a player during his playing days....those who laid it on the line might have some remnant of an arguement. Vershawn needs to get a life! |

DeShawn - VerShawn, Potato - Pototo
That's my feeling, but I'm not a Husker, so I really don't have a say. |

Actually, the root of Vershawn's bitterness stems from the current staff not giving him a GA job that he asked for. And yes, the b!tching is tired and played... |

| I heard the conversation on the radio. i didnt think the main sticking point of his arguement was as much a feeling of entitlement as it was the University was giving them only a single game ticket to come back for the 1997 1/2 a NC 10 year aniversary. like crit im not a husker... but 1 ticket? a bunch of 30ish year old guys are suppose to show up by themselves without at least one guest? thats pretty lame. |

I am sure that wasn't the main sticking point depending on your feelings about it, but when you think you should be getting something for free and you're not that's a sense of entitlement.
If it's a 10 year anniversary for a NC...that's all great, but exactly which couple of hundred people is the University supposed to kick out of their seats for this? It's not realistic...especially at a school with so many high dollar boosters and season ticket holders.
I'm not a Husker either...if that matters, which it shouldn't for the purpose of the discussion. |

It's a player reunion, not a player and whoever they all want to invite reunion. Do you realize how impossible it is logistically to secure hundreds of extra tickets? It's an unreasonable expectation. |

I get the ticket thing, but then Vershawn followed it up with "and what about hotel rooms?" stating that the university controls the hotels on game day and they could get rooms for all of them.
That's going just a tad too far IMO. |

Dont get me wrong here guys but these guys are people who played a game and so for the most part they act like 5 year olds With America's blessing, athletes raised their expectations in terms of respect. They have somehow been put in a position to demand respect without giving any. But a larger issue to me is the way the media have simultaneously lowered the standards for hero status. When Jordan re-retired, re-retired re-retired the sports media became a hurricane of rumors and questions that devastated all established perspective. Jordan was the plain and simple best basketball player ever, but journalism's attempt to solidify that notion for history was so overwrought it was embarrassing, even sickening. We heard how Jordan was a "singular athlete" who "transcended the game" and had taken his place in the American sports pantheon with the likes of Muhammad Ali, Jackie Robinson, and Babe Ruth. Get a grip. Ali cast himself as lightning rod for an overheated '60s culture poised to torture him for it, and gave up his title rather than his religious beliefs. Robinson's courage is perhaps unprecedented in sports, and he inspired and corresponded with repressed blacks from California to Capetown. Ruth, for all his misbehavior, embodied a bigger-better-farther spirit in an America coming to terms with its own roiling greatness in the '20s. A nd Jordan, he what? Went strong to the rack? With perhaps more worldwide recognition and influence than the other three had among them, Jordan talked to Tweedy Bird on the phone. For money. And you are suppressed that some ex athlete from NU is upset that he is doing a local radio show instead of getting the spotlight shined down on him and fans worshiping him. Big shock his is crying!

Rack him! Jordan was a great althlete who used his fame to create wealth. Robinson and Ali were great althletes who made social changes. Look. I am a big Husker fan here. Been so since the the time when TO could not get his 'signature' win. However, things have changed on Stadium Drive and former players have to deal with that. Does it hurt when you go back and it is not all puppy kisses and chocolate ice cream? Sure, but that is the way it is. This coaching staff has no obligation to hire former players as Grad Assistants. And for those who decry that this somehow shows Callahan does not do things the 'Nebraska Way', please tell me what that means. Bob Devaney is widely considered the architect of the 'Nebraska Way'. One of his most successful Grad Assistants was not a former NU player. Guy by the name of Tom. You might have heard about him. He is kind of a big deal around here. Callahan, if he is here in 5 or 10 years, might hire some former players as GA's, but they will likely be players he knows. I would not be surprised if one of his first former player GA's is Zach Taylor. I also would not be surprised if another was Grix. I also do not see what obligation the AD has to give 2 tickets to each player. This is a lot of people folks. It is not like 10 extra tickets. The 97 roster is probably--best guess--150 people. So, where are those tickets gonna come from? Not mine I can tell you. |

Exactly... On the Jordan note, however, my personal take...Jordan did transcend the game. Jordan's singular ability took basketball to a new level. Not merely because of his on court acheivement, but because he effected literally millions of kids in a generation that wanted to "be like Mike" and that difference in play is being seen today at all levels. |
