OUCH!!! IN AN AGREEMENT BOUND TO have a ripple effect on the DVR industry, Walt Disney Co.'s ABC and ESPN struck a deal with Cox Communications in which Cox's video-on-demand service will disable a feature that allows consumers to fast-forward through program content and TV commercials. The test will start this fall As part of the deal, Cox will disable the fast-forward option. The deal also includes a provision that the two companies will work on a dynamic ad insertion system on Cox's On Demand service that would target specific ads to specific viewers. ABC could do deals with other cable operators that include disabling the fast-forwarding function on all ABC programming that comes through a particular cable system--whether on VOD or on viewers' DVRs. |

I've always wondered what advertisers thought of DVR use. Now I know.

| The "consumer" is the advertisers in this case Mr. Dukester. They pay the bills, the viewer doesn't. |

Depends what side of the picture tube you are sitting on. I have dvr for the express purpose of avoiding the glut of commercials. So much for technology. |

| I heard that advertisers are getting smarter and having one still image for their commercials so that when you fast forward you still see the image. |

Fairs fair. If they kill the fast forward option, they should have a 'replace the announcer' button. One need never hear Musberger again! |

"Perhaps the worst thing that can happen is to reach into the refrigerator and come out with something that you cannot identify at all. You literally do not know what it is. Could be meat, could be cake. Usually, at a time like that, I'll bluff. "Honey, is this good?" "Well, what is it?" "I don't know. I've never seen anything like it. It looks like...meatcake!" "Well, smell it." (snort, sniff) "It has absolutely no smell whatsoever!" "It's good! Put it back! Somebody is saving it. It'll turn up in something." Thats what frightens me. That someone will consider it a challenge and use it just because it's in there." -- George Carlin |

I'm about ready to have Cox pull the plug on my cable and then I'll march down to Radio Shack and buy myself the biggest roof top antenna they sell. Hopefull I could pull in signals from Denver and Chicago! |
