Interesting article regarding Morrison's bout with Graves Disease and his time at Creighton. Are we really THAT wacked out as a sports society that we would threaten a kids long-term health over a season of basketball? At Creighton none the less? http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/news?slug=rivals-126279&prov=rivals&type=story_recruiting |

From everything I hear, Morrison is full of crap. He wasn't forced to play. His doctors had cleared him, but he wasn't putting forth the effort to get back in basketball shape. Two sides to every story. I just don't believe Morrison's. |
|
After acknowledging that he was desperate, Dwight said "people will resort to saying things they know aren't true when they are desperate." That about sums it up! |

After hearing a bit more on this subject, I think I lean more that both sides are telling bits of truth. While I believe that Morrison was probably "medically" cleared to play basketball, I also believe, probably, that same doctor's personal advice to him may well have been to seek a red-shirt, since he would not be able to perform remotely close to 100% and that the year would more than likely be a waste of eligability. I believe he probably requested the red-shirt due to the illness and I believe he was denied the request...in his eyes the coaching staff made him play with the disease and put his health at risk. Irregardless, if it was true that he was cleared medically, I don't think you can fault Altman for disallowing the red-shirt....although it probably wasn't in the best interest of the student-athlete. I'm sure it WAS in the best interest of the University. As for the comment about wandering around town at night...part of the symptoms of Graves Disease are sleeplessness and disorientation. Let's give the kid the benefit of the doubt.....it may have been the disease and not that the kid was suicidal Matt. Irregardless, this is not a positive story for Creighton, even if they did do things by the book. |

The University is bigger than any one individual. I predict this is situation is a non issue in a month or less. I don't accept Morrison's explanation of the events. It appears to be self serving as one would expect. |

I think that is exactly the point. The University is going to do what's best for the University and the two may not be mutually exclusive. Do you seriously think this doesn't have the potential to hurt recruiting? An allegation that a coach denied a red-shirt request from a disease-sticken player (the No. 1 JUCO player in the country). Nevermind whether or not he was cleared or not cleared. The kid was sick, he requested the red-shirt, the red-shirt was denied. You going to send your kid there if there is a hint of credibility behind Morrison's story? |

You must be jesting when you use the term "hint of credibility". As an example, he (Morrison) attended school at Creighton so even if everything else is untrue then a hint of credibility could remain as he at some point attended school at Creighton. Words can be a terrible weapon when used for the wrong purpose by someone with an axe to grind. My point is that I believe this questionable story will not have any potential harm on recruiting today, tomorrow or in years to come. Kids come to Creighton to get one of the best educations in the world. A basketball player will attended Creighton if they are fortunate enough to get the chance to play for one of the best coaches in America. Since when has it been proven that the university does not have the best interest of the student athlete at heart? |

The fact that he attended Creighton had nothing to do with the "credibility" comment. My point is really that even if a tiny portion of his story is true, ie....he was ill to the point where he couldn't play, he requested a redshirt, and he was denied the redshirt........it just doesn't look good. Maybe if it were cancer or something a little more serious. It really makes no difference to me.....I'm just looking at the situation from an objective viewpoint, since that objectivity seems to get lost when you're too close to the story, ie. a fan. You're probably right about the recruiting thing......they'll probably land the next No. 1 Juco player in the country next year. If not, they'll sure have a bunch of smart 2nd and 3rd team all-state players from Omaha and Iowa. As for the best interest at heart thing........I don't know...giving this kid an additional year of free tuition on the University is probably not something they were really excited about. I believe they came to the realization that this kid was not as good as they originally thought, so they felt this was on opportunity to fix their screw-up. Just my opinion though. |

| At this point, it doesn't even matter if it's true or not. It's out there. Other coaches from other teams will definitely use that on recruits. Not sure what tangible effect it will have, but it's another negative thing that can be used against Creighton....true or not. |

There is always something out there, be it the coach is leaving or getting fired, probation is looming, someone better is being recruited for the same position. When the dust settles, in Dana I trust, in Ty Morrison I do not. |

Good for Ty. When he was in Omaha I always thought he didn't get a fair shake. Sometimes doctors can say one thing but only you know your body and how it feels. The kid said he was sick and no one believed him. Good for Ty. Former Seahawk Bobby Engram and Olympic sprinter Gail Devers also have Graves. It ended both careers. |

You really are a simpleton aren't you? Only YOU could turn my post into a knock on people with Graves Disease or grave diseases, when the "knock" was really on you. |

Actually, I did you just the same way you did me. I posted "Level Playing Fields" on the amputee Olympian thread and you ran with: Posted By Crit40 on 05/16/2008 4:45 PM There's a word for that......discrimination.
You twisted my intent and ran with it. Hope you enjoyed the tables being turned. I'm simple enough to give you back your offering. |

Let's see. My conclusion came from you stating that you didn't think Legless Oscar had a competetive advantage, but a competetive disadvantage, and because of that, you don't think he should be able to compete. Translation.....this disabled guy has no business running in the olympics with "normal" runners. Further translation.......discrimination. Now mine. "Oh F#ck! Can I change my mind." Translation.....I don't feel good about agreeing with Fergie on any subject, so maybe I should change my position. Conclusion: My analysis of your position regarding Oscar seems to be pretty much on the mark. Your's of mine. Not even close. In fact not even the right context. Further Conclusion: I win and you lose Dick! |
