10/06/2008 1:33 PM Alert
Kansas 35, Iowa State 33
In a tale of two halves, Iowa State got out to a 20-0 lead on a 16-yard Alexander Robinson run, an eight-yard catch from Marquis Hamilton, and two Grant Mahoney field goals. And then Kansas came out of the locker room roaring as Jake Sharp scored on a 67-yard pass play and a two-yard run, and Kerry Meier scored on catches from 23 and 21 yards out as part of a 35-7 run to go up 35-26. Iowa State got a two-yard Hamilton touchdown catch with 1:15 to play, and recovered the onside kick, but Austen Arnaud missed on all four of his passes. For KU, Reesing ended the day 18-of-26 for 319 yards with 3 TDs and an INT. Jake Sharp had 19 carries for 79 yards and a score and Kerry Meier had 7 receptions for 125 yards and 2 TDs. For ISU, Austen Arnaud was 27-of-45 for 268 yards with 3 TDs and 1 INT. Alexander Robinson had 10 carries for 51 yards and a TD and R.J. Sumrall had 10 catches for 106 yards and a TD. What does it mean for Iowa State.......The Cyclones needed to get the chains moving in the second half to slow down the Kansas momentum, and couldn't. Austen Arnuad had a great game both rushing and passing, and he tried to get things moving in the second half, but the defense didn't help the cause giving up too many big plays, while the line didn't get nearly enough pressure on Todd Reesing. Now the team has to show how mentall tough it can be. After collapsing at home in a game that could've changed the direction of the program, the team has to come through with a tough outing against a Baylor team good enough to pull off the win at home. What does it mean for Kansas..................The Jayhawks showed just how explosive they can be when everything is clicking. After an awful first half against Iowa State when nothing was working, the offense came out focused in the second half as Todd Reesing put every throw where it needed to be and Jake Sharp and Kerry Meier were fantastic. Now the goal has to be to put together a full 60 minutes. With no running game to speak of, that's hard, so it'll be up to Reesing to he sharp throughout. Losing four turnovers didn't help, but again, give credit for overcoming the pumped up Cyclones in a tough environment.

Missouri 52, Nebraska 17
Missouri started off the scoring with a 58-yard Jeremy Maclin touchdown catch in the first minute of the game, but Nebraska answered with a 20-yard Nate Swift scoring grab. And then it was over. Mizzou went on a 24-point first half run with short touchdown runs from Derrick Washington and Jimmy Jackson and a 17-yard interception return for a score from Brock Christopher. Nebraska got a field goal late in the first half, but the Tigers were on a 45-3 spurt with Washington scoring twice in the third quarter on a seven-yard catch and a 43-yard run, and Danario Alexander caught a 26-yard touchdown pass to end the fin for the Tigers. Nebraska got a garbage touchdown with no time left on the clock. It was the first time since 1978 that Missouri won in Lincoln and was the worst home loss for Nebraska in 53 years. For the Tigers, Chase Daniel was 18-of-23 for 253 yards and 3 TDs. Derrick Washington had 14 carries for 139 yards and 2 TDs and Jeremy Maclin had 5 catches for 89 yards and a score. For the Huskers, Joe Ganz was 26-of-38 for 290 yards with 2 TDs and an INT. Marlon Lucky had 14 carries for 46 yards and Todd Peterson had 7 receptions for 81 yards. What does it mean for Missouri.........The Tigers showed just how powerful and strong the offense can be both through the air and on the ground. Nebraska didn't stand a chance once everything started moving, while the Tiger defense did a great job of keeping the Husker attack in check after an early scoring drive. The best part about the Tiger offense? Chase Daniel isn't running the ball. The star of the show isn't taking any big shots as he's spreading the ball around well. What does it mean for Nebraska............14 penalties, no running game, no defense and an ugly blowout loss that was even worse than the 52-17 final score indicates. Nebraska did nothing against Missouri after the first ten minutes, and now, after failing two straight home tests, with the loss to Virginia Tech last week still fresh, the team needs to find something it can count on. But first, head coach Bo Pelini has to relax. He's apologizing to everyone, he's taking a blowout loss to a national title calbier team too hard, and he needs to realize that it's going to take a little while. Nebraska is hardly a finished product.

Oklahoma 49, Baylor 14
Oklahoma had no problems on the road against the Bears as the offense rolled up 594 yards. Sam Bradford threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Manuel Johnson and a 42-yard scoring pass to Juaquin Iglesias, and he ran for a one-yard score. DeMarco Murray added two short scores and Chris Brown and Mossis Madu each had a short scoring run. OU is now 18-0 all-time against Baylor. For Baylor, it was all Robert Griffin. The freshman quarterback struggled with the passing game, but he ran for 102 yards and two short touchdowns. It wasn't nearly enough as OU's 28-point first quarter lead was too tough to overcome. For OU, Sam Bradford was 23-of-31 for 372 yards with 2 TDs and an INT. DeMarco Murray had 26 carries for 96 yards and 2 TDs and Juaquin Iglesias had 6 catches for 133 yards and a score. For Baylor, Robert Griffin was 11-of-26 for 75 yards and also had 21 carries for 102 yards and 2 TDs. Kendall Wright had 4 catches for 16 yards. What does it mean for Baylor..............Call this a measuring stick game. Baylor wasn't going to beat Oklahoma, and it got blown out of the water in the first quarter, but it kept on battling and Robert Griffin had yet another fantastic game. He didn't throw well, but he was fantastic on the move. Defensively, LB Joe Pawelek might seem a step slow compared to the Sooners, but he was in on seemingly every play with 13 tackles. Now the team has to put this in the past and come up with a win against a decent but beatable Iowa State team. What does it mean for OU............Ho hum. Oklahoma is going through the motions and blowing teams away. Of course, Baylor isn't Texas or Missouri, but it's still a decent young team that's emerging under Robert Griffin. The Sooners came into the lookahead game, with Texas coming up next week, and hung up 28 points in the fisrt quarter to make it a laugher. Sam Bradford continues to get 15 days to throw, and that allows Manuel Johnson and Juaquin Iglesias chances to get deep. Yeah, the defense let up a bit in the overall intensity and Robert Griffin ran wild, but that's to be expected.

Oklahoma State 56. Texas A&M 28
Oklahoma State kept the offense rolling, but the defense and special teams made it a blowout as Ugo Chinasa picked off a pass for a touchdown and Dez Bryant returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown, to go along with a 29-yard scoring grab, on the way to a 21-0 lead. Mike Goodson did everything he could to keep the Aggies alive, running for touchdowns from 80 and 11 yards out, but he was banged up and only finished with eight carries. OSU kept on rolling as Bryant caught two more touchdown passes and Patrick Lavine returned an interception to stay comfortably ahead. A&M forced five turnovers and Andre Sexton made 12 tackles with a forced fumble and a sack. For OSU, Zac Robinson was 10-of-13 for 186 yards with 3 TDs. Kendall Hunter had 21 carries for 90 yards and Dez Bryant had 5 catches for 103 yards and 3 TDs. For A&M, Jerrod Johnson was 24-of-43 for 218 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs. Mike Goodson had 8 carries for 112 yards and 2 TDs and Ryan Tannehill had 7 receptions for 49 yards and two scores. What does it mean for OSU............Everything’s working and everything’s clicking. Dez Bryant isn’t just playing like an All-American, he’s playing like a Biletnikoff winner. He’s also a devastating punt returner who all but ended the Texas A&M game with his return for a score. Yeah, the Aggies might be a mess, but the Cowboys took advantage of every chance and every mistake with five takeaways. There were 10 penalties, and A&M was able to make things a little interesting with some big plays, but there’s no real complaint with a 56-28 win. For A&M............. Mike Goodson is a warrior. He taped things up to try to get out there and battle against Oklahoma State, but he only ran eight times in the blowout loss. Jorvorskie Lane is non-existent, Jerrod Johnson is fine, but he’s not quite ready for primetime, and the turnovers are flowing. Oklahoma State is ripping up everyone, but A&M needs to find something that works to be able to hang with teams like this. Things are going to get uglier before they get better unless everyone gets healthy, and unless the defense started to figure out something it can do right.

Texas 38, Colorado 14
Chris Ogbonnaya took a pass 65 yards for a touchdown and ran for 13-yard score on the way to a 28-0 Texas lead. Colorado ended the run with a seven-yard touchdown catch from Jake Behrens following an interception from Cha’Pelle Brown, but Texas answered immediately with a four-play, 71-yard drive finishing off with Cody Johnson’s second short touchdown run of the game. Colorado didn’t get on the board again until garbage time with a 28-yard catch from Patrick Williams. Colt McCoy ended the day 23-of-30 for 262 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs. Chris Ogbonnaya had 9 carries for 71 yards ahd six receptions for 1169 yards and a score and Quan Cosby had 9 receptions for 71 yards. For CU, Cody Hawkins was 13-of-33 for 118 yards and a TD. Rodney Stewart had 12 carries for 27 yards and Patrick Williams had 4 recptions for 50 yards and a score. What does it mean for Colorado......Texas is really good, but Colorado has to be better at home against everyone. The offense remains a problem. Cody Hawkins had a rough time, completing only 13 passes, but to be fair, he was under pressure all game long. The Buffs got down so quickly that there wasn't time to get the running game going. What does it mean for Texas..........Lookahead, schmookahead. Texas took care of business against Colorado from the opening snap with Ogbonnaya making a few big plays in space, while Colt McCoy was Colt McCoy. The biggest plus was that McCoy wasn't the leading rusher, getting just 11 carries, but it's not like the running backs became workhorses. The defense remained great at getting into the backfield with three sacks, but the O line gave up four. Even so, considering the Oklahoma game is on everyone's mind, this was a great game to get through. Colorado might not be great, but it's still a tough team at home.

Texas Tech 58, Kansas State 28
Graham Harrell threw six touchdown passes and ran for a one-yard score in a blowout win. It took a quarter for things to get ugly. Kansas State tied it at 14 early on in the second quarter with a one-yard Josh Freeman run before Texas Tech broke it open with a 24-point run. Lyle Leong caught three touchdown passes and Michael Crabtree grabbed a 29-yard strike. Ernie Pierce scored for KSU on a 33-yard catch in the first quarter and on a return of a blocked punt in the final minutes. Texas Tech gained 626 yards to Kansas State’s 296. For K-State, Josh Freeman was 13-of-28 for 170 yards with 1 TD. Lamark Brown had 25 carries for 64 yards and Deon Murphy had 4 catches for 42 yards. For Tech, Graham Harrell was 38-of-51 for 454 yards and 6 TDs. Shannon Woods had 18 carries for 70 yards and Michael Crabtree had 9 catches for 107 yards and 2 TDs. What does it mean for K-State...............The Wildcats are supposed to be able to keep up the pace in a shootout with a team like Texas Tech. It wasn't even close. The team has yet to prove that it can beat anyone with a pulse, and now comes the tough stretch of four road games in five dates. The one home game? Oklahoma.....uh oh. Josh Freeman has to be better than 13-of-28 passes, and there has to be more of a running threat. 113 yards and a 3.1 yard team average aren't going to cut it. What does it mean for Texas Tech..............The offense is just starting to hum at the right time. Kansas State was supposed to be a dangerous trap game in Tech's first real road test of the season, and it was a joke. Graham Harrell was on point from the start, the running game was solid, Shannon Woods and Baron Batch keep on rolling, and the defense kept the middling Wildcat offense in check. Nebraska is struggling, so next week's game needs to be another blowout, and Texas A&M is a mess, so there's no reason to expect anything less than a 7-0 start before the meat of the schedule kicks in starting with a date at Kansas.

============================================

Michigan State 16, Iowa 13
Deep in Michigan State territory, Iowa could've kicked a field goal for the tie but chose to go for it on fourth and one. On the MSU 21, Shonn Greene was stuffed and the Spartans were able to stop the comeback. MSU scored the first 13 points on two of Brett Swenson's three field goals, and Charlie Gantt caught a four-yard touchdown pass, but Javon Ringer was held in check and Iowa's offense started to move in the second half. Tony Mossbrucker hit two field goals and Andy Brodell caught a 31-yard touchdown pass, but the Hawkeyes couldn't get te one yard it absolutely needed. For Michigan State, Brian Hoyer was 13-of-24 for 184 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. Javon Ringer had 25 carries for 91 yards and B.J. Cunningham had 4 catches for 76 yards. For Iowa, Ricky Stanzi was 15-of-22 for 158 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. Shonn Greene had 30 carries for 157 yards and Andy Brodell had 5 catches for 79 yards and a TD. What does it mean.........Iowa had all the momentum, the defense was playing extremely well, and Michigan State couldn't stop Shonn Greene. So why go for it on fourth down rather than kick the field goal and go to overtime? Greene was stuffed on 4th-and-1 on the MSU 21 with just over two minutes to play in a moment that could define the season. It's not like Tony Mossbrucker was off; he hit field goals from 25 and 33 yards out. Now it's on to a road date at Indiana with Wisconsin and Illinois to follow. Things could get far worse before they get better.

Illinois 45, Michigan 20
Michigan took a 14-3 lead into the second quarter as Greg Mathews caught an 11-yard touchdown pass. And then it was all Juice Williams as the Illinois quarterback ran for a six-yard score, swing a pass to Daniel Dufrene for a 57-yard touchdown, and connected with Jeff Cumberland for a 77-yard touchdown as part of a 28-point run to put the game away. Williams closed out the scoring with a two-yard run. In all, Williams accounted for 431 yards of total offense, the most by any player ever at Michigan Stadium. Illinois outgained Michigan 501 yards to 319. For Illinois, Juice Williams was 13-of-26 for 310 yadrs and 2 TDs and also ran 19 times for 121 yards and another two scores. Arrelious Benn had 6 grabs for 122 yards. For Michigan, Steven Threet was 18-of-35 for 250 yards with 2 TDs. Sam McGuffie had 19 carries for 70 yards and a TD and Martavoius Odoms had 7 catches for 129 yards. What does it mean........Michigan's offense continues to be inconsistent. The win over Wisconsin appeared to carry over into a nice start, but there was no running game, again, and the passing attack couldn't pick up the slack. The defensive line was as lousy in the second half as it was good in the second half against the Badgers, but LB Obi Ezeh had a nice game with 15 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss. Eventually, the offensive line has to come around and start producing on a regular basis.

We have any ISU fans here? They were the best losing team of the week I think.
