Love or hate the Yankees, last night was one those truly magical nights in sports that actually transcends sports. To watch Babe Ruth's daughter throw out the first pitch was off the chart. |

And they snubbed the rocket from every facet of the celebration. I disagree with that. Just like the HOF continuing to snub Pete Rose, the guy helped put a few of those banners in the rafters big time. Just because he's a lying, cheating, can't be trusted hunk of Texas sh1t doesn't mean he didn't put W's on the board. He should have been allowed to be there or a part of it, even if those east coast idiots booed him into tomorrow. |

As much as I'd like to think that Clemens learned how to cheat in Texas, its far more likely that he learned it in Boston, the undisputed cheating capital of the sports world. |

Posted By AltaJoe on 09/22/2008 11:34 AM I guess you had to see it. Joe, it was really the "transcends sports" comment that I question. If you were to suggest an event that occured this weekend that transcended sports, for me, I wouldn't have thought of saying goodbye to Yankee Stadium to make way for monetarily raping the past, current and next generation of fans of the sport, as THAT event. For me, I would have immediately thought of the 37th Ryder Cup, which showcased arguably the best golf seen in the last decade, maybe ever, and more importantly showcased pride, country, teamwork and sportmanship. On a weekend where there is so much uncertainty with our economy, reminding us of how our pocketbooks are going to continue to get robbed by the likes of professional sports doesn't leave a warm fuzzy feeling in my tummy. I didn't watch the Yankee spectical...I chose to watch the other stadium whore Jerry Jones and his Dallas Cowboys pummel the Packers, as baseball died for me after "the hearings". |

Was Giambi there? Was Pettite there? Then Clemens should have been. The Yankees ownership looked the other way with all of them and reaped the benefits of their artificially-enhanced performances. |

"Perhaps the worst thing that can happen is to reach into the refrigerator and come out with something that you cannot identify at all. You literally do not know what it is. Could be meat, could be cake. Usually, at a time like that, I'll bluff. "Honey, is this good?" "Well, what is it?" "I don't know. I've never seen anything like it. It looks like...meatcake!" "Well, smell it." (snort, sniff) "It has absolutely no smell whatsoever!" "It's good! Put it back! Somebody is saving it. It'll turn up in something." Thats what frightens me. That someone will consider it a challenge and use it just because it's in there." -- George Carlin |

I stand by the notion that Roger Clemens deserved an invite or to be included in the video of the Yankees greats. Hell Chuck Knoblach was even in the footage. |

I couldn't agree more. MLB is shamefully hypocritical on this entire subject. |

After acknowledging that he was desperate, Dwight said "people will resort to saying things they know aren't true when they are desperate." That about sums it up! |

Crit40, since you decided to watch a fairly meaningless, early season, soon to be forgotten football game, you missed ESPN doing an pretty good job showing that Yankee Stadium was more than the place the Yankee play; Joe Louis dealing a blow to Hitler's notion of the Aryan master race, Knute Rockne's "win one for the Gipper" speech, Lou Gehrig's gut wrenching "luckiest man on the face of the earth", Pope Paul conducting Mass before 80,000 to name a few.
Please tell me you're being facetious about the Ryder Cup. A game where a guy using the most technologically advanced clubs, hitting a stationary ball, at a stationary target, on fairways and greens smoother than the best carpet at the Nebraska Furniture Mart in front of a crowd quieter than a church mouse, is a skill, such as painting by numbers, not a sport. It may be great drama, but then again, so is America's Greatest Loser. I have to ask, would it have moved you so if the Euros had spanked the US?

Nope. I am being totally serious and totally real. You didn't watch the Ryder Cup did you? The crowd was far from quiet. These new stadium deals are nothing more than legalized theft. And I'd venture to guess there are a good share of New Yorkers who agree with me. To build this new stadium, they tore down city parks, football fields, tennis courts, soccer fields.......places that kids used to play. There is $650MM in public money going into the new ballpark, and although the park is owned by the city, the Yankees get to play there rent free. Additionally, one guy's season tickets have gone from $10,000/year to $100,000 per year, plus, the guy has to pay a one time fee to be eligible to buy his season ticket, which is another $50,000 to $150,000 (payment plan offered). This is the case all over the professional landscape. It is nothing less than highway robbery from the fans who have supported these teams for generations. No, I didn't watch the B.S. at Yankee Stadium. I'm sure there were a lot of fantastic things that happened there over the years, but the primary backdrop was Major League baseball and George Steinbrenner's Yankees. And I'm just not interested. |

I'm not disagreeing with your total package Crit but isn't a MLB ballpark a place where kids play? I know growing up one of my favorite things to do was to make that trip to Kansas City and watch the Royals. Point: A major league baseball ball park provides great fun and positive experiences for the youth of america. |

You know it never is a big deal until they tear down your neighborhood for "progress" and "greed".
Playing Pop Warner football, or being involved in a neighborhood soccer league, or playing on swing sets and playground equipment are not the same as going to a ballgame.
And who in the hell is going to be able to afford to take their kids to a ballgame in these new parks? |

Probably the same kind of people that can't afford to pay UNL the extortion on top of the ticket price to watch the Huskers, yet do. |

Joe, have you heard any of the stories out regarding these new stadiums? An average blue collar guy has held season tickets for 20+ years for the NY Giants. He was paying about $4,000 per year for his tickets. In the new stadium, if he wants to keep his seats, he has to pay $10,000 plus he has to pay a one time seat surcharge of $25,000. Yankee stadium fan.....has held box seats for 30+ years. His ticket prices jumped from like $10,000 per year to $100,000 per year plus he has to pay a one time seat surcharge of $50,000. In Dallas, Jerry Jones is charging a seat surcharge of $150,000 to $200,000. Are you suggesting to me that NU is charging these kinds of prices? Trust me, a couple hundred bucks is a little different than a couple thousand bucks for a day of fun. If I'm going to get financially raped, I'd just as soon Mickey Mouse does the dirty deed over several days vs these franchise owners who apparently have no clue who their fans are. |
