Huskers suspend three baseball players after scam
by Mitch Sherman, Omaha World Herald

LINCOLN — The Nebraska athletic department announced Friday that two NU baseball players and one former Husker will face suspensions next year for exchanging team-issued equipment for credit vouchers to a Lincoln sporting goods store in June.

Senior outfielder Andy Gerch will be required to miss the first 12 games of the regular season. Junior catcher Jeff Lanning and senior infielder Craig Corriston are suspended six games. Lanning transferred to the University of New Orleans this offseason.

Senior infielder and designated hitter Jeff Tezak was also involved, but he received a benefit of less than $100 and will not face a school-mandated suspension.

NU said the penalties were reviewed by the NCAA and that violations of the extra-benefit regulations are considered secondary.

The players could face additional discipline from coach Mike Anderson.

"I'm very disappointed that these secondary violations occurred," Anderson said in a statement. "This is not indicative of Nebraska athletics. Now that we have the findings from the NCAA, I will consider whether further discipline is appropriate."

NU acknowledged its investigation two weeks ago after several people with knowledge of the situation said the players returned bats to Scheels at South Pointe Pavilions for store credit. The players were recognized by employees, who contacted Nebraska coaches. The transactions were quickly reversed.

Gerch, from Lincoln Pius X, hit .304 with five home runs and 32 RBIs while starting 57 of 59 games last season. He recently underwent shoulder surgery, which could threaten his future playing status.

Corriston, from Paris, Texas, hit .320 with five homers and 41 RBIs in 53 starts in his first year at Nebraska. Tezak, another junior college transfer out of Poway, Calif., led the team with a .335 average while hitting three home runs with 37 RBIs in 51 starts.

Lanning hit .242 while making 18 starts.

The Huskers are tentatively set to open the 2008 season with a four-game series at Stanford.

According to Gary Bargen, NU assistant athletic director for compliance, the severity of suspensions was based on the value of the benefit received.

Bargen directed the department's investigation and filed a report with the NCAA, which approved Nebraska's suggested penalties.

That sort of behavior is reserved for the football team!

It's always amusing watching Dukester abstain from his demons and attempt to be cordial. Got aced early from this board and G-spot decided not to come. Simpleton!
