http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80917349 I've always thought with the 24/7 news cycle and ESPN's relentless urge to bring you every shred of irrelevant news that we'd be seeing more coverage of the symposium since it is one of the off season pinnacles of life in the NFL between OTA's and camps. I thought it was a good idea brought up to take the rookies to the HoF. That's one of the more memorable places I've visited. It would be intriguing to see more of what goes on and gets covered in the symposium to avoid some of the modern day obstacles of NFL athletes. Maybe they should do the symposium on a renewal system...head back for refresher every 3 - 5 years. Carucci also has a good article on Fisher's presentation at the Symposium on NFL.com. |

The only problem with these introductions to the life of professional sports is that 99 percent of those involved aren't listening, or they are listening and saying to themselves, "Yeah, well I'm (insert name here) and I'm above that kind of garbage. I'm a first-round draft pick. I've got millions in the bank already before my first practice. I've got this. I've got that....that crazy sh*t will never happen to me."
And then it happens...all the leeches and hangers-on start showing up and the fun really begins. And then when they're sitting in a courtroom awaiting trial on weapons, drugs or rape charges they're asking themselves, "How did this happen to me?" -- not thinking for one minute that it was something they were probably told at this symposium, but they decided they didn't need to listen to the advice being handed down by those who have been there before.
It's the unique combination of talent, ego, money and the teflon-coated idealism of youth. Some are able to overcome and be productive citizens while, at the same time, being world-class athletes. Too many, though, end up like Pacman Jones, Leon Lett or that yahoo from Ohio State who was supposed to be the best running back of all time and is now behind bars.
And I agree with you, egami -- it SHOULD be a refresher course, but I'd say every other year at the least. There are some veterans who would likely be more receptive to hearing this advice again and actually implementing it in their lives off the field. |

Yeah, no doubt that is what happens on many levels. I've always felt the Symposium was really more a CYA implementation for the NFL and how they are viewed in the media more than an actual deterrent program.
Real life is a far cry different than the on stage scenario they role-played in the video. |
