He told Dan Patrick on his radio show that he took them back in the day.

What does that mean? Are the Steelers Super Bowl victories tainted? Should there be asterisks?

After acknowledging that he was desperate, Dwight said "people will resort to saying things they know aren't true when they are desperate." That about sums it up!

If anyone thinks that the 70's NFL was void of anabolic steroids, they are dreaming. I would probably liken the 70's NFL to the 90's MLB as rampant steroid use. I'm certainly not shocked about it, if it is indeed true.
I did a research paper in high school about steroid use in athletics, and there were lots and lots of cases of steroid use, with the NFL being the worst abuser at the time.

North Dallas Forty was a pretty realistic view of the NFL back in those days.

So, why should Terry Bradshaw get a pass (who admittedly did it), but Bonds doesn't?

Putting personalities aside, shouldn't the punishment be the same for each crime? Tarnished legacy?

I guess for starters, I'm not entirely sure anabolic steroids were illegal back then? It was widely known that it would cause problems later in life, as evidenced by the likes of John Matusak and Lyle Alzado and others, but as far as being banned by the NFL or the general public, I can't answer off the top of my head.

And I guess I don't know that Terry Bradshaw was asked back in the day whether he took them or not and lied about it, in an attempt to deceive the fans and the public.

Look, I'm more against the likes of Bonds and Clemens for the mere fact that they think we're all idiots and don't know the truth. I'm against them for not being truthful. If they would come out and say, you know what, I did it, and so did about 50% of the major league, I'd have a hell of a lot more respect for them.

So to answer your question, if we are for sure comparing apples to apples, I guess we shouldn't treat them differently. But Bradshaw was never indicted by the Federal Government either.

I'm not entirely sure if this is correct, but as far as I can see, steroids were banned by the NFL in 1987 and they became illegal when congress passed the Anabolic Steroids Act of 1990 for non prescribed purposes.

So, when Bradshaw was doing it, he wasn't violating any rules of the game or any federal laws. He was only damaging his body.

When Bonds did it, he was in violation of the rules of the game AND federal laws and he was growing his head to unhealthy proportions.

Bonds is guilty because of hat size alone. Terry B still entertains at a very high level.

Because he didn't have to tell anything about his steriod days. He did so because he was asked about it.

Bonds denied it all from the very start and the era factor looms huge in terms of medical advances. Obviously the usage of steroids was vastly different when Bradshaw played then when boulderhead did.

Besides, everyone likes TB, boulder will die being loved only by those that he pays bills for.

Without reading any other replies I am going to say "no big deal". It sounds like, from various interviews I've heard, that almost everyone was doing steroids in the 70's and 80's.

I am not excusing it, I am just making the case that that was the culture and mindset of the era.

Also, much of what they were doing wasn't illegal and wasn't against NFL rules. I think that is why it was largely so prominent at the time.

I heard a guy yesterday on FSN, I don't remember his name, but he played in that era and said "Man...everyone was doing it, I don't know what Bradshaw's point was bringing it up, but he is far from the only one".

Paraphrased, of course.

I think I read somewhere where Lyle Alzado made a statement that 90% of his football friends were on steroids during the 70's. Now that is pretty widespread if you ask me.

I think Scott Baldwin was on roids when he was at NU and that exposed his mental disabillities.

I agree that these would, in fact, be the main reasons along with the fact that Bonds has never owned up to it.
Nor for that matter, has McGwire or Clemens, both of whom are steroid-related punchlines now who happen to be white.
The all-time classic idiot was Palmeiro..."I have never taken steroids ever. Now, let me say that again, pointing my finger even harder for extra emphasis. I have, what? I have to take a test now? Oh, shi-, gotta go. Good night!"

"Perhaps the worst thing that can happen is to reach into the refrigerator and come out with something that you cannot identify at all. You literally do not know what it is. Could be meat, could be cake. Usually, at a time like that, I'll bluff. "Honey, is this good?" "Well, what is it?" "I don't know. I've never seen anything like it. It looks like...meatcake!" "Well, smell it." (snort, sniff) "It has absolutely no smell whatsoever!" "It's good! Put it back! Somebody is saving it. It'll turn up in something." Thats what frightens me. That someone will consider it a challenge and use it just because it's in there." -- George Carlin
