Owners opted out of the CBA. So, if no agreement is met then we'll head into uncapped season in 2010. This scenario in the minds of many think it'll be the beginning of the death of NFL football popularity.

There is no question the cap era has been great for football. However, the NFLPA made out like bandits last CBA and they will have to give something up this time around...will that sacrificial lamb be NFL Rookie Salaries? I think it will.

Most players want a smaller rookie pool, I think most owners probably want a smaller rookie pool. Gene Upshaw, however, is determined to die on the hill because he believed, and somewhat rightfully so, that the rookie cap saturation economically benefits the veterans.

My argument is that while this is true, it benefits a limited number of guys. At the end of the day we know owners will spend. And I say if the rookies are capped then those dollars will be allocated to vets without missing a beat. And then you have a more veteran-driven market based on performance versus a market driven by inflated rookie numbers.

The interesting this is...I've yet to see Upshaw present a downside to it, he just keep clamoring that it's a must have situation.

Go Blue!
