Thanks to Dwight it looks like the last thread got nixed... Went over to help out in Cedar Rapids area last week...man, what a tragic mess. Iowa City and Cedar Rapids are in for a long rebuilding process, but despite the disaster it seemed like people were in generally good spirits and ready to take on the task. |

| One of the Boy Scouts that died father is a neighbor of mine. Tragic. Just tragic. We are formulating a plan to help financially. They are not destitute but we are sure it won't hurt. |

Interesting background on how Iowa City flooded since a large reservoir is upstream! More than 384 billion gallons of water flowed into Coralville Lake between May 1 and Friday, records show -- enough to completely fill the reservoir three times. Coralville Lake took nine years to build and was completed in 1958, at a cost of $15.7 million. At normal summer levels, the lake covers 4,050 acres and extends almost 19 miles northward from the dam. At flood stage, the waters spread across 25,000 acres and stretch back 27 miles. May 1st by then, the Corps had scrapped standard practice -- anticipating the lake's rise, rather than waiting for it like in 1993 -- the corps was releasing an extra 3,100 cubic feet per second, pushing an extra 2 billion gallons of water into the Iowa River every day. |

It's my fault," said first-year Nebraska coach Bo Pelini. "Damn right, yes, I'm embarrassed. I apologized to the team. I apologize to the state of Nebraska. I apologize to everyone associated with Nebraska football. "It's my responsibility. I was hired to do a job and I didn't do the job, I'm just not a very good coach. |
