Donaghy has moved from making vague accusations to nearly naming names.

Has your opinion changed?

Imo, this is still just a guy that is trying to avoid being the fall guy.

Marquee players get preferential treatment and must-see playoff series are rigged to go 7???

Next thing we'll hear is NBA players don't like rubbers and all their weapons are regisitered.

My opinion hasn't changed, I've thought there was funny business going on in the NBA playoffs for years. I don't doubt what he's saying one bit.

Yes, it does make for great conspiracy theorist fodder.

Well, you know me, I love me a good conspiracy theory. I remember at the time of that Lakers-Kings series thinking something just wasn't right with it, the Kings had the Lakers on the ropes, they had a double digit lead in that game 6 and then all of a sudden the Lakers could do no wrong. Similar thing happened in the Lakers-Blazers series the next year. I really started losing interest in the NBA after that.

Well, and I didn't mean that as a slam as much as...agree with the conspiracy theorists or not, they now have ammo, and it WILL damage the NBA. To what degree remains to be seen.

Now, that being said, I don't buy it...have never really bought into the conspiracy hype at any level in any sport. I think this is a classic case of a guy who got caught up in something illegal and is slinging as much mud as possible hoping something will stick, but at the end of the day...to assume this has been going on for years and years and someone just now got caught? Too much for me, personally.

If the NBA itself were somehow implicated, it'd be a different story, but this is a referee working with third party people.

But, either way, whether you buy it at any level or not...it has to be a cause for concern at the very least and it'll certainly be interesting to watch play out.

Egami -- I agree with you from the aspect that Donaghy is throwing mud everywhere he can to try and make something stick. Desperate times call for desperate measures (as we're all aware of every time DDtM fires up one of his lame comeback attempts under the name Omahan, Fergie or whatever his name-o-da-day happens to be).

The thing about it, though, is that there has been too many "coincidences" happening in the NBA in recent years (Miami-Dallas finals, Lakers-Kings Game 6, Knicks winning Ewing draft lottery, etc.) for us as sports fans to not look at the NBA with a certain degree of suspicion. And Stern's ongoing denials are starting to remind me of Kevin Bacon's character in "Animal House" during the homecoming riot when chaos has erupted and everybody is running for their lives and he's calmly saying, "Remain calm...all is well."

And now this year we see Brent Barry get absolutely gang-raped in the LA-SA series during a potential game-winning situation and no foul called??? Would the same thing had happened if the Spurs were playing, say, Utah in the conference finals??? Or Portland??? Or Dallas???

I'm still not sure that the problem with the NBA is sh*tty officiating and not "company guys" determining outcomes of games. But after some of the damning evidence that has reared its ugly head over the years, I'm not totally certain that Donaghy, desperate felon that he is, isn't telling the truth on this.

I am not saying there isn't something worth pursuing...I am saying I, personally, am not buying into it. The Donaghy thing, in my mind, isn't a "smoking gun" and until there is one I am going to file it in the "Conspiracy Theories" folder.

Look, you can take ANY sport and do that...NHL, NCAA Football/Basketball, NFL, MLB...there is a lot of subjectivity in these games that can be looked at in that light.

Personally, I think the officiating in the NBA is a large source of the problem...it's been inconsistent for YEARS, DECADES even. I mean, that is one thing I have never understood, why the NBA doesn't crack down on bringing consistency to their officiating crews. Personally, I agree with Phil Jackson, it'd be nice if the officiating were outside the control of the NBA, but that'll never happen.

Although, I am not quite so sure about this "damning evidence"...so far, the only damning evidence I've seen is on Donaghy and not the NBA. Not that that shouldn't raise suspicion, but it's big step from suspicion to evidence.

The guy is done! Kaput, finito! So why would he care about his reputation or for that matter who he would be taking down with him.

The more they keep saying "It's just an isolated case" and "He's just one guy", the more I tend to think the NBA doth protest too much.
There are certain referees who seem to be brought back well past their expiration date.
And there's no reason Joey Crawford should have been allowed anywhere near a Spurs playoff series.
Stern's done a lot of things right as the NBA commissioner over the years, but he's seemingly let it go completely to his head. He has this "I Am King David Stern, How Dare You Question My Wisdom And Authority" attitude over anything other than softball questions sometimes.
Do I think there was a widespread conspiracy? No.
Do I believe that subtle "hints" were dropped to officials at times? Absolutely.

Could be meat, could be cake. Usually, at a time like that, I'll bluff. "Honey, is this good?" "Well, what is it?" "I don't know. I've never seen anything like it. It looks like...meatcake!" "Well, smell it." (snort, sniff) "It has absolutely no smell whatsoever!" "It's good! Put it back! Somebody is saving it. It'll turn up in something." Thats what frightens me. That someone will consider it a challenge and use it just because it's in there." -- George Carlin

That's about where I stand. No way I trust Stern enough to give full credit for integrity.

Refereeing has been a major issue in the NBA for decades...

David Stern also manages to keep a straight face when he says Clay Bennett made a good-faith effort to keep the Sonics in Seattle.
