Crit touched on a topic in a thread a while back I meant to elaborate on, but forgot about until a recent discussion with some guys at lunch today.

I can't find it, but Crit made a comment that, at least in my mind, alluded to the fact that the HoF's seems to somewhat, if not in some cases grossly, marginalized by inductees.

What should the HoF mean? In my opinion, it should be the ultimate honor. An unquestionably great player by the majority of fans, writers and players. A distinct minority of players should make it in versus what typically do make it in.

I don't know, I think in many ways the HoF inductions are more meaningless in some regards.

My original comment was in reference to Dick Vital getting into the HOF and that inductions such as this are why many think HOF's are becoming a joke.

Take this year's NFL inductees. There were a couple deserving candidates that didn't get in on the first ballot because there were several guys who were nearing the end of their opportunity, so these first ballot guys (locks to get in eventually) were not voted in, to supposedly right a wrong. If they're good enough to get in, put 'em in. If they're not, don't. If it takes a good number of years to get voted in, maybe they're not as deserving......so don't take it out on the "sure thing" guys for sympathy of others that aren't. I'm not suggesting that this year's NFL HOF crop is not deserving....hell, maybe they got screwed in years past in the same manner, but it is turning way too political for the most part.

In Dick Vital's case, the story is the guy lobbied to get in. Which tells me, in both of these examples, that the HOF's of today are more focused on the political side than on the deserving side, hence, they are becoming a joke.

I don't care what Dick Vital has done for basketball. He was a horrible coach, and he is an annoying commentator/analyst. Not HOF worthy, IMHO.

BTW, a HOF'er is someone whom you just know belongs based on his/her contributions to the sport and/or how they played the game.

Counting the Herd one hoof at a time.
