| Are they going to allow listeners to ask questions to Frank?? I would like to exchange margarita recipes or something. Or maybe voice my satisfaction of his firing from the university of Nebraska. |

Franks cupboards were bare! Once the recruiting fell into the Solich years, the losses started to come. And Callahan got handed those teams his first two years here. His recruiting isn't even in a category with solichs' non-effort filled antics on the trail. Did he ever land a blue chipper as a head coach at Nebraska? |

All teams make mistakes from time to time- Charley M Do you have any recruiting stories about some of the athletes you recruited? CM: The best story I have is when I went to North High School in Wichita, Kansas to recruit a young man who was a friend of ex-husker Jeff Smith. Jeff now lives in Wichita and works in the justice system. He’s a parole officer. Through the years Jeff has gotten to be really good friends with this one particular kid and, I didn’t know this, but the player came up to me and said, coach, I’m so and so and I really want to go to Nebraska. He said Jeff has been one of my friends and he’s talked to me about Nebraska. He got his degree there and that’s what I really want to do. I looked at the kid and he was just a little guy. I look at this film and I’m saying to myself, you know we need to scholarship this guy. He was probably 155 – 160 pounds, probably 5’9”. So I went back and showed Tom the film and he said, Charlie we can’t recruit him. He said we’re bringing in Johnny Rogers son and we cannot take two small running backs. We just can’t do it. So I went and turned the kid down. His name was Barry Sanders. So I’m famous for turning Barry Sanders down and a lot of people through the years called me a lot of names, but of course after they read this segment, they may call me more. It was bad because Johnny’s son Terry got hurt and never really played much. Barry Sanders was like trying to tackle an eel. The guy was probably the best back I ever saw, as far as running the football. |

Adam Carriker was a project coming out of high school. Originally he was recruited as a QB. He then was switched to "athlete" designation and eventually he blew up into a huge, hulking d-end. He was far from a blue chipper coming in. The weight room in Lincoln helped make him. |

| You were attempting to insinuate that Solich had recruited him. It was not Frank Solich that recruited Adam Carriker. |

Callahan didn't recruit all of the players Nebraska has now, either. Solich doesn't deserve all the blame for past recruiting failures any more than Callahan deserves all the credit for its current successes.

"Perhaps the worst thing that can happen is to reach into the refrigerator and come out with something that you cannot identify at all. You literally do not know what it is. Could be meat, could be cake. Usually, at a time like that, I'll bluff. "Honey, is this good?" "Well, what is it?" "I don't know. I've never seen anything like it. It looks like...meatcake!" "Well, smell it." (snort, sniff) "It has absolutely no smell whatsoever!" "It's good! Put it back! Somebody is saving it. It'll turn up in something." Thats what frightens me. That someone will consider it a challenge and use it just because it's in there." -- George Carlin |

Considering the Head Coach is ultimately responsible and will be fired first if things do not go the winning way, I beg to differ Blackshirt. Ultimately, each head coach on the college level is responsible for the recruiting of quality athletes on his team. Example: Saban now at Alabama, the minute he got there the blue chippers starting arriving. That's not luck, that's charisma and integrity speaking in those living rooms. Frank never could sell a new BMW for half the sticker price because his presentation stunk. Period. |

Rivals.com only goes back to 2002, not sure if any other sites have older historic data, but at that point Nebraska wasn't ranked in the top 25 for recruiting classes. In fact, they don't show up in the top 25 until 2005 where they ranked 5th, 2006 they ranked 20th, 2007 they ranked 13th and are currently 11th in the 2008 ranking. This is why I have not understood Nebraska fans desire to pre-maturely run out Callahan. While he hasn't returned them to their glory days he has re-built them into a respectable recruiting team again. Building programs take time and like Solich or not the fact is he didn't recruit well at all on a whole regardless of who recruited Carriker. And, at the end of the season, even if he wins the North, if he loses the B12 Championship and isn't in the hunt for a BCS bowl, rabid Nebraska fans will be calling for the head of the guy that has done the most positive work there since Osborne. I don't think Callahan will restore Nebraska to the Osborne era, but then again it was easier to do that when Osborne did than in todays world too. Imo, Callahan and his recruiting of talent at least has earned him another 3 years after this season to see what he can truly do with his recruiting base. |

the question is can he or will he turn these recruits into productive football players? my question is does callahan have the talent to do that in the first place? |

Are you sure that's the question? 2004 5-6 2005 8-4 2006 9-5 That looks like productive improvement to me. I've already demonstrated how he's turned their recruiting around. Does that not merit him at least 3 more years to see if he can further his success in rebuilding the program? I'll be the first to admit I don't think Callahan is the greatest coach in the world, but I think it's unfair to question his ability based on results thus far. Let me also ask you a question. Is what you asked for really what you want? Because I think Nebraska is already there. It seems like you are, however, comparing what he's doing to the old Husker glory days versus merely getting the program back on a reasonable competative level. |
