Anyone know much about trees beyond basic Google research?

We are looking at planting shade trees and want something kind of fast growing (3+ ft/yr) and ideally not too trashy in terms of dropping seedlings and crap besides its normal dropping of leaves in the fall.

Right now leaning toward:

1. American Sycamore
2. Quaking Aspen
3. Hybrid Poplar

We really like Maples, but they tend grow so dang slow. We'll probably do a Maple out front where we don't need the shade.

I was going to suggest Maple.....but it appears you've already ruled it out. My experience with maples is that they grow fairly quickly. Now maybe I just don't have a good judgement of time. Our last house, when we moved in the maple in our front yard was 10 ft. We moved 10 years later and the thing had to be 35 to 40 ft tall.

Counting the Herd one hoof at a time.

Yeah, we are looking at the south side of the house to shade our decks...one of our deck is raised, it's kind of actually a 2-tier deal more like a large patio area at ground level with a deck built above a portion of the patio. So ideally something that grows like 3+ ft/yr....like the Poplar, it grows like 6 ft/yr.

And our deck is like 14 feet off the ground or so...not sure 35 or 40 ft. would cut it, so we've been looking at trees that will mature to like 60 ft.

I have a two maple trees in my yard. Normal leave dropplings but the roots are endless. Some extend 50 feet away from the tree. It would take probably more time than you will live in the home but I wouldn't grow the tree near any ground that you have ideas of using for building or planting.

Sycamore would be nice choice.

We love Maples, but even the fastest growing are relatively slow in comparison. I think we're planting three, so maybe the furthest east we'll put in a Maple since the faster growing trees will need to be more south and southwest of the deck area for latter day and evening coverage.

We're leaning toward Sycamore and Poplar or Aspen in the other two spots.
