Posted By SeahawksSB42champs on 02/11/2008 4:53 PM I thought I read somewhere that he has a son and a daughter who are invovled in the organization, but whether or not they will take over I'm not sure.
All I know is if he does have children within the organization, a request for conservatorship would be tops on my list before Al pisses the whole franchise down the tubes. |

Posted By vranged on 02/11/2008 4:57 PM His son was as big of a hard-ass in the A-Rod and Johann Santana dealings as George ever was. He may be more annoying than Dad.
When he dropped the ball on A-Rod after his announcement during the World Series, my initial response was, "Well, that apple didn't fall very far from the tree." But Yankees fans are used to having a blowhard egomaniac in charge, so it shouldn't be much of an adjustment there... |

I don't have any respect for a list that doesn't incorporate Al Davis. Quite frankly, not to be even mentioned is just pure dishonesty. The guy is single-handedly responsible for the bulk of the problems surrounding that franchise. There is no question Al Davis should be remembered and honored for much of his work in the league. That doesn't bail him out of getting this tag though. Art Modell definitely ranks up there. Forgot about him. |

Posted By Omahan on 02/11/2008 4:16 PM Pertinent to this topic, ESPN.com compiled a consensus called "The List: Worst Owners in Sports" 1.) Jeremy Jacobs - Boston Bruins 2.) Art Modell - Cleveland Brown/Baltimore Ravens 3.) Bill Wirtz - Chicago Blackhawks 4.) Jerry Jones - Dallas Cowboys 5.) Peter Angelos - Baltimore Orioles 6.) Jerry Reinsdorf - Chicago Bulls 7.) Mike Brown & Family - Cincinnati Bengals 8.) Donald Sterling - LA Clippers 9.) Bill Bidwell - Arizona Cardinals 10.) Daniel Snyder - Washington Redskins Dishonorable mention: McCaskey family (Chicago Bears), Bill Giles, Dave Montgomery and co. (Philadelphia Phillies), George Shinn (Charlotte Hornets), Chris Cohan (Golden State Warriors), Carl Pohlad (Minnesota Twins), William Clay Ford (Detroit Lions), Bud Adams (Tennessee Titans), Peter Karmanos (Carolina Hurricanes), Mike Illitch (Detroit Tigers), Bob Irsay and family (Baltimore Colts), Paul Loria (Montreal Expos), Michael Heisley (Vancouver Grizzlies), and the conglomerate of all Chicago's owners. Notice that Al Davis didn't make the list - not even dishonorable mention? And this list is obviously an all time list with some of these geysers being dead already. Also I have been perpetually baffled by the Detroit Lions over the years. Ford is a young guy that is known for innovation and change and Millen I've always felt has done everything to bring guys to Detroit. Like so many franchises maybe the curse is on in the Motor City.
I can't believe the current owners of the Chiefs and the Royals aren't at the top of that list! |

| Can't speak for the Chiefs, but the Royals don't have the money to compete with the larger market teams. That is just fact. |

| Yeah, ESPN is a collection of bloggers essentially. Outside of a few good writers they have left. |

ESPN is not credible as a sports writing & reporting organization?
Really? News to me. Who is then?

ESPN has been on a steady downward spiral from solid sports reporting for some time now. You can say what you want, but their buyout was the worst thing that happened to them. |

I'm not defending nor making a case for either. I just have always thought that ESPN was the Number 1 source for sporting news in the world for about 10 years. I know the buyout brought in other controlling interests but other than the occasional early release of speculatory information (that all organizations are guilty of) I have never heard of ESPN being at the center of any controversy involving yellow journalism or alike.

Well, if your line in the sand is yellow journalism, maybe not.
But frankly, I don't see how anyone can have followed ESPN since the 90's and not clearly see a difference in their practices. I think they are directly responsible for a lot of the mainstream drama getting perpetuated in the major sports these days.
And they'll freely, and openly, act as a rumor mill. In fact, they charge people for the "information" now. |

Being a "collection of bloggers" and being a rumor mill are two different things. Like when Herbstreit permaturely released the Les Miles thing. In my mind, he was doing his job and I doubt he would've released it (with his reputation on the line) as noteworthy news without someone at least mildly credible backing it.
Listen, I don't think every organization is responsible for every action their staff do. People take liberties that aren't theirs to take sometimes. Rumors are as much a part of sports as they are to soap operas. Hell, I'd even go as far as saying sports would'nt be as interesting without them.
But ESPN, even though they are the huge conglomerate that they are today, has always been a place I go to first for information regarding sports.
Who cares who owns them? |
