The numbers are clear, Phoenix pays somewhere in the area of 3.0 to 3.6 million a year to acquire Shaquille Oneil. Conversely, the Lakers had to toss some players away to make the numbers work to acquire Gasol.
vranged took a little comment about salary and magnified it into something it is not. It is only a facet of the whole picture, not the whole picture. In terms of Gasol, I wonder about that trade when I look at team needs, I think it fit Memphis' needs because they are clearly rebuilding. But with blossoming center Andrew Bynum I don't think Gasol was needed as much. Bynum is hurt but was and will emerge as a force in this league soon.
Salary caps are what they are. In place to keep spending from outgrowing profits. (To some extent) Winning equates to money. Danny Ainge took a gamble in Boston and thus far he has succeeded. An infusion was needed in Phoenix to take the greatest show in the NBA up one notch. Steve Kerr gambled.

If you think it's a good trade for Phoenix because of what Shaq adds, that's fine. I, and most of the sporting world, disagree with you, but whatever.
But to cite salary cap reasons (when Shaq is a much bigger hit than Marion) or the fact that Shaq will be able to guard Dirk (which is ignorant beyond belief) is a bona fide joke.
As to the trade itself, Miami acquired an oft-injured, out-of-shape, can't-be-in-the-game-at-crunch-time-because-he-can't-hit-a-free-throw, OLD salary cap nightmare for a much younger athletic superfreak, who is the best statistical player in the NBA (points, rebounds, blocks, no turnovers, percentage, 3-pointers), and is a perfect fit for the system.
I'm nitpicking because it's obvious you don't know what the hell you're talking about YOu don't know sports.

After acknowledging that he was desperate, Dwight said "people will resort to saying things they know aren't true when they are desperate." That about sums it up! |

I never stated he would gaurd Dirk. He will be a presence in the middle against Dirk and Duncan.
What do you know? Nothing more than I or anyone else that comes here. You know what you see on TV or read online. Your professor-like image is only real to you.
I have never seen anyone lauding your miraculous insider knowledge of sports. Keep slurping the "ME" juice and eventually you'll gag.
Ironic that you meshed your words incorrectly while attempting to call me stupid. Funny stuff.
Miami acquired Shaq?
I'll correct it for you: Miami acquired an athletic, defensive wizard, proven warrior that needs a team to at least be 2nd best on. Phoenix got the enforcer they needed. |

As a follow-up to Dman's brilliant nugget of info that Phoenix acquired Shaq to defend Dirk, I hear they're also looking to bring Spud Webb out of retirement to guard Yao Ming. We'll see how that turns out.

Those numbers aren't clear to me. I think Mike and Mike maybe were leaving out part of the trade, but feel free to document a source showing the numbers... All I know is that when I looked at the salaries on ESPN it was a wash. I think they are ignoring the Banks aspect. Marion makes roughly like $16M and Banks $4M, iirc. So, I am not seeing where they are making the $3M figure. |

| Spud has put on considerably weight so I wouldn't have faith in that matchup today. In Spud's playing days, I post him up against Yao in a heartbeat. |

Of course you would -- you think Shaq is going to defend Dirk.
People who rely on Wikipedia and Google for their info always are funny, because when they get caught reciting what they read wrong -- they have no idea how to recover.
Thus is Dman.
Try some original thought, sport. |

It's the truth platform. No wonder you can't identify it.
Go look up truth on WIKIPEDIA. Now, try acting in conformance with it. It'll be difficult, as all new things are -- but it's necessary.
Can't wait to see Shaq guard Dirk!!!!!!!!

You are as lame as a three legged deer limping accross a busy highway. Lost and bewildered.
Some guys on here possess what I possess. A type of moxie that comes from living and learning. You have yet to acquire that special gift. The things that are important to you will be your demise if your persona on here is remotely close to who you are.
Shaq has and will gaurd Dirk. And Spud would've shut down Yao. |

I don't know alot about basketball, but when in a zone defense, don't you guard who's ever in front of you? I realize man to man is......well, man to man, but zone is different, right? I never played basketball guys......wrestling was my thing. |

Yep, that's right.
There are some hybrids too...box and one and triangle and two where the number references how many are man to man.
I haven't watched enough NBA since they allowed zone defense to be played to know how many teams utilize or how much. I know I see it used some when I am bored enough to watch NBA. |

Well, in fairness, he didn't say it wasn't possible to begin with.
I don't know if they even play zone. I always consider zone defense to be a guard the area type of thing...so, that may be a matter of perspective. Not sure if they run zone at all in Phoenix. |

| I don't watch a lot of NBA, and I guess the times I have, they are usually playing man to man.....so it is probably a remote thought. |

Brian Shaw would have a better chance at guarding Dirk, then Shaq. That's how dumb your original statement was.
Please forgive my typo, and Dman's parents for bringing him into this world. |

And while your at it....say thanks to vranged's influencial mentors for sending such a polished product to the market. Tell them that the market that they enter is saturated. The world has too many "waiting to blow" types in it already. One day when the market changes there will be a place for loose cannons to be a viable and sellable item. Until then lock him up in a soft cage and feed him plenty of beef. |
