1. The greatest pitcher in the MLB got traded. 2. The greatest upset in Super Bowl history. 3. The winningest coach in NCAA history retired. 4. One of the greatest centers in NBA history (Shaq) got traded. Has there been a week like this in recent history? What's the impact: 1. Mets may be the favorites to win the Series. If Pedro can come back at all, and with that offense, we might have a Mets/Sox WS rematch. I hope a Met hits a slow roller down the first base line in the bottom of the 9th, with the winning run on 2nd base.... 2. Pats choke. With their weak-ass schedule next season (conference games), they might go undefeated again (if they re-sign Moss). The question is, should they go for it this time? 3. Knight quits on his team. I don't like it when coaches, who always preach "never quit; always see things through, etc." do this. Maybe he's entitled to do what he wants, but it still leaves a sour taste. He'll go down as one of the most controversial figures in collegiate sports history, remembered as much for his antics as his coaching ability. 4. Suns take a lateral step, in my opinion. They get an inside presence, and give up a complainer (Marion) but is he enough? Is it worth $20M per? All that being said, I think it was worth the roll of the dice for the Suns. For the HEat, it was a coup. Getting that contract off the books, and acquiring the Scottie Pippen (Shawn Marion) to the HEat's Michael Jordan (Dwyane Wade) could be a great combination for years to come. |

After acknowledging that he was desperate, Dwight said "people will resort to saying things they know aren't true when they are desperate." That about sums it up! |

I didn't know the Heat had traded Shaq. He can do enough in the middle to compliment Stoudamire, Nash and Co. to make a difference in huge playoff games that they never seem to be able to win. IMO, a good trade for both teams. As far as Knight, I think it was more a thing of timing. Pete Newell evidently (according to Knight) had say in the decision and one thing I know for sure is that Bob Knight is loyal to his own. He once stated during his IU days something to the effect of if you wanted playing time at 2 gaurd on his current team, (that included his son Pat) then you'd better be at least 3 times better than Pat or you won't see the floor. He is loyal to his son and I think this was in large part his gift to him. A way of saying "I am handing you what I've started." That and he wants to pound the crap out of that homeowner that filmed him hunting on his land and do so without having a university judge his actions. I disagree that the Pats choked. I just think they lost a hard fought, killer of a SB game against a Giants team that was on a mission. Bob Gibson got traded? |

With regards to the Pats, I didn't like typing that they choked. If you watched that game, you wouldn't say that. It was two good teams going at it, and the Giants earned a victory, rather than the Pats gave it to them.
However, that being said, when you consider they were 12 point underdogs, and that they were undefeated, and that the Giants were viewed as the 5th or 6th best team in the playoffs heading into them, and that people were talking about the Pats as being THE BEST of all time -- I don't think it's going too far to say it was a choke, based on all those factors. |

Just looking at the stats going into the game including the point spread it would seem like a choke job but after watching the game it looked like the Giants "took what they wanted", where have I heard that before? Regarding Bobby Knight, I don't see it as Coach Knight quiting on his team, first of all his son played a huge part in running the team during practice and the current players were aware that Pat was going to be the head coach some day. If Coach Knight had just quit and left them with an interim coach and the University having to do a search for a replacement then I would agree, however he did much the same thing as what Tom Davis did at Drake, just ask any Creighton fan how well that is working out? The only exception is that Dr. Tom left at the end of the season. All in all I think the only surprise was it was in the middle of the season but the team will not miss a beat with Pat at the helm. Also from what I have read online the Administration, players and fans understand and respect Coach Knights decision and after all isn't that all that actually matters? Regarding Shaw, ggod move for Shaq as he was not goint to win anything where he was at. |

I hate the Mets. Good move on their part though. 2. Pats choke. With their weak-ass schedule next season (conference games), they might go undefeated again (if they re-sign Moss). The question is, should they go for it this time? Call me crazy, I think they lose at least 4 next year. My thought was...what better way for Knight to go out. It underscores his entire career I think. Great teacher, too bad he couldn't temper his other attributes. 4. Suns take a lateral step, in my opinion. They get an inside presence, and give up a complainer (Marion) but is he enough? Is it worth $20M per? All that being said, I think it was worth the roll of the dice for the Suns. I think this is a better trade for the Heat, personally. They get younger and lose an anchor...physically and psychologically. Not that it's a bad trade for Phoenix. They bring in someone who has been there. They have the personnel to rest him, but at $20M it's a costly gamble. Both teams get rid of players that are the center of negative attention to some degree. It's one of those trades that I think the end will justify the means if they win for a lot of people. If not, I think all the critics will be all over it as a bad move by trading for dead weight. I think the change of venue will refocus Shaq though. |

| Trades can sometimes have affects on the whole spirit of a team. Example: The Boston Celtics, even with Garnett out for several games now, the winning spirit continues. It's a fever winning is. The Suns just might have what they need to get over the hump now. |

If no championship materializes for either team, it was a horrible move. BTW, has Ohio State fired Tressel yet? |

This week in sports depositions, depositions, depositions. Lloyd Lake looks to take down Reggie Bush, the Heisman and the USC Trojans. Brian McNamee looks to take down Roger Clemens, his late career Cy Youngs, and the HOF |

| Nothing epitomizes the greatness of sports like depositions. If only we could televise some baseball arbitrations and have the IRS audit a few athletes, it'd be the perfect sports week. |

I breifly heard Bill Walton say "Shaq's arrogance is an insult to those who think."
Did anyone hear that on TV or know where that came from? BW will speak his mind and evidently he had a bone to pick with the big guy. Any specifics? |

| It was on ESPNEWS, and I happened to see it. Walton is not a Shaq fan at all -- or at least that's what his tirade led me to believe. He blasted Shaq for not caring. He made a comment like (paraphrasing) "Obviously you have to trade Shaq to get him interested, which should be embarrassing to him. He's as talented as they come, but he hasn't worked hard in years. If Shaq returns to form, and is the missing piece, it's insulting to the game. Why wasn't he working this hard all along?" |

I see....so it would seem there is nothing personal going on between them, just BW disagreeing with Shaq's work ethic.
Alrighty then. |

| His tone made it sound as if it was personal. Maybe I read into it too much, but Walton sounded like he had a grudge against Shaq. |

| The comment I heard sounded harsh and judgemental. Though, not out of character for BW. |
