Ok, I went ahead and read it...it was pretty short. I have mixed feelings...on one hand it sounds reasonable, but on the other hand it seems biased. The perception I get is that he perceives sign stealing as cheating. I disagree with this. I think any team imploring tactics (within NFL rules) during a game to read, and steal, signs is perfectly acceptable. Then, when I consider the described scenario (which, actually is on multiple media sources...I've read this particular depiction of this account 3 times now including this blog) you're still largely speculating that there is some outside, illegal source at work that is perpetuating and helping the situation. So, in the end, this isn't the smoking gun. It's going to flat out take someone from within the organization now, or historically, with legitimate, first hand knowledge and involvement to bring this ship crashing. Also, regarding the statistical analysis he makes regarding Patriots stats versus losses...I have two responses. 1. I'd say 2+ wins is within the reasonable margin, in my opinion and 2. You can make a more reasonable case that their discipline, talent and coaching easily bridges that gap. I don't think it's fair to automatically attribute the gains to an isolated factor even if there was concrete evidence proving this went on. You still have to factor in the fact that this team has excelled in a level of discipline that in my opinion is probably unprecedented. I've never seen team as disciplined as that Patriots under Belichick. |

Also regarding this section...
Asked about the allegations yesterday, commissioner Robert Goodell answered, "I’m not aware of that.” NFL Spokesman Greg Aiello added, "We have no information on that."
Then later, on the same or very next day, spokesman Aiello told the AP, "We were aware of the rumor months ago and looked into it. There was no evidence of it on the tapes or in the notes produced by the Patriots, and the Patriots told us it was not true." (emphasis mine)
I am disappointed he leaves out the context of the first quote or direct link to the article because all I've read time and time again suggests Goodell has remained constant.
And, while at face value the statement about the Patriots telling them it was not true seems pretty stupid you have to give them credit regarding the fact that no one has put forth credible evidence or leads...it's all been rumor and speculation and both Goodell and Aeillo have been rather consistent on that point. |

This, right now, carries the most merit and it's the one thing I don't hear people focusing on: Walsh, 31, now an assistant golf pro at the Ka'anapli Golf Resort in Lahaina, Hawaii, worked for the Patriots from 1996 until the winter of 2002-03, when he was fired. He has hinted to ESPN.com that he has information that could be damaging to both the league and the Patriots but has declined to make it available, saying it could be seen as stolen property. Walsh said he is fearful of potential legal action against him by either the league or the Patriots if he details what he knows. He refused to provide evidence of potential wrongdoing unless ESPN agreed to pay his legal fees related to his involvement in the story, as well as to an indemnity that would cover any damages found against him in court. ESPN denied his requests. So, it appears now immunity has been granted by Goodell. Let the games begin. If anyone can produce the logical conclusion to how information was used to a significant advantage it's this individual. At that point, I'll gladly throw the Patriots under the bus. |

Yeah, I didn't think that blog was a smoking gun either. I just found it interesting.
At the end of the day, despite my efforts here probably revealing otherwise, I don't care that much. I just like to argue. The only reason I even expended as much effort as I did is because I see striking similarities with the steroids issue, and you've read how I feel about that.
If you aren't cheating, you aren't trying. |

After acknowledging that he was desperate, Dwight said "people will resort to saying things they know aren't true when they are desperate." That about sums it up! |

I only care just because I hate the mindless droid band-wagon mentality that everyone will jump on these things more because they hate the subject than because there is really credible information suggesting the subject is guilty.
And, frankly, I don't mind if that's their reasoning...just be honest about it. I think Bonds did steroids. I can't prove it though. And I am not believing it just because I hate Bonds...I believe it because I have reasonable speculative evidence. However, I have to admit he could be innocent about it and that I could be wrong.
But yeah...it was an interesting blog...this whole ordeal could get real interesting now that there is immunity involved. What I am most curious to see is just how damning Walsh's information is or is not. |
