Not something a University should be getting into. This is one of the few things I do not support my school in doing, and I had let it be known to the Administration. I do not buy into everything the article states, for a fact this idea is not welcomed by a good percentage of Alums and parents of current students and some staff members. The fact alcohol is sold at the Qwest does not legitimize the University peddling it on campus. Does the word "liability" cause anyone concern besides me? |

The story is on the front page of the World Herald, this is the best I can muster in regard to the link: http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=2798&u_sid=10236977 As a Creighton grad I agree with the "Hack" on this one, the decision to get into the bar business is not what Creighton University is about. Nothing good can come of this decision. In my humble opinion the competition to attract the top students in the country just got a little tougher for the little Jesuit School on the hill. There are better ways to keep the students intertained other than building them a bar on campus. And yes the word "liability" did come to mind when I first heard of this becoming a reality. |

| Eh, it doesn't sound like that big of deal to me, but I think they'd be wiser to restrict it to students only. |

Why even stop with Creighton? Plenty of High Schools in Omaha with 21 and 22 year olds probably some 23 year old juniors at some schools which I prefer to not name! |

It's my fault," said first-year Nebraska coach Bo Pelini. "Damn right, yes, I'm embarrassed. I apologized to the team. I apologize to the state of Nebraska. I apologize to everyone associated with Nebraska football. "It's my responsibility. I was hired to do a job and I didn't do the job, I'm just not a very good coach. |

I guess I don't see a problem with it. The students are going drink, regardless, so the University might as well provide a safe, controlled environment while cashing in on money that is being spent elsewhere. Does the word "liability" cause anyone concern besides me? I can see the liability issue, but only on the "public relations" side of things and not on the financial side. That's what insurance is for. I guess I would be more concerned about 14,000 people driving home from a Creighton game held at the Qwest Center where alcohol was served vs. a little ol' bar & grill that might seat 100? |

| I was under the impression that the alcohol served during Creighton games was served by a third party vendor...is that not the case? |

No dram shop laws in Nebraska, so the Qwest and Jays have nothing to worry about from a liability standpoint there. |

| I'm sure that is the case, midge. But it's the association with a Creigh'un function that, IMO is more damaging. Again, there is insurance for liability issues......but not for reputational issues. |

I agree. I was just questioning it because of the way the OP had stated it kind of left it open for interpretation. I thought maybe he was suggesting that Creighton was actually selling and profiting off of it. was just curious as to what the specifics were. I would guess it's part of the contractual agreement that the Qwest Center, or its contracted vendor, is allowed to do so. |

At last count approximatley 8 states don't have Dram Shop Laws on the books however, keep in mind that Dram shop law provides for a remedy against a restaurant or bar that negligently serves an intoxicated person, but places the blame where the jury wants to. Not having a Dram Shop law does not give you immunity against lawsuits filed for reasons other than negligence on the bars part. |

| So, if I got drunk at the Qwest, and got in an accident and hurt somebody -- the victim would have a claim against the Qwest for overserving? I don't think that's true. Judge would dismiss it, because of Nebraska not having that remedy (i.e. dram shop). If it were in Iowa, you could make the claim -- but in Nebraska, I don't think so. Are you saying i'm wrong (which I could be, but that's just not my understanding of it). |

Are you saying i'm wrong (which I could be, but that's just not my understanding of it). Your example is correct in the context of Nebraska not having a Dram Shop Law on the books it is not an automatic that you can go after the Qwest using your example. Normally Dram Shop makes a business which sells alcoholic drinks or serves liquor to a drinker who is obviously intoxicated or close to it, strictly liable to anyone injured by the drunken patron or guest. However if a bar serves an intoxicated person and lets say they fall off the stool and split open their head or fall down in the parking lot and seriously hurt themselves, the bar can still be held liable. Dram Shop Laws were inacted as more of a third party type avenue for someone injured by drunk who should not have been served by an establishment. Just because a particular state does not have a Dram Shop Law on the books does not mean that bar owners can't be held liable for certain situations which happen on their property. Also Nebraska has some "hospitality" laws in place which hold you responsible in the event you host a party. |

| From my explanation it is a restaraunt that serves alcohol. Just like an Applebee's or an Indigo Joe's. I believe many alums and employees will use this and I guarantee alcohol consumption will be watched very closely. Just like every other college that has alcohol at its functions. |

Nebraska Liquor Control Commission on Wednesday gave the OK for a license. Anti-alcohol advocacy group Project Extra Mile protested the liquor license that had already been granted by the Omaha City Council, saying it is inappropriate for a college setting. Project Extra Mile had a representative in Lincoln on Wednesday who said she was hoping a State Patrol report questioning whether a bar could sell alcohol on campus on a daily basis would sway the commission. "What business does a university have seeking a liquor license?" asked Project Extra Mile's Diane Riibe. "It inconceivable to say every day is an alumni event." Riibe said Project Extra Mile may appeal the decision to the District Court. Rumor was they were going to file an appeal this week, however that doesn't mean they will or will be successful |
