How about Charley Casserly? The much maligned former Houston GM that snubbed Young and Bush for Super Mario. 14 sacks this season and not a Pro-Bowler.
There must be a flaw in the system there too. |

| I don't see Casserly as being the brainchild behind Mario though. Mario was at the top of numerous teams boards...Dallas, for one. Also, he was highly sought after by half of the staff in Houston including the HC and don't forget that they did attempt to secure a deal with Bush (iirc), but he wouldn't take it. So, not too sure I'd give a lot of credit there to Casserly, personally. |

I think since Casserly suffered the brunt of heavy scrutiny for snubbing the hometown Young and not being able to seal a deal with Bush. He most certainly should now receive the lion's share of kudos for Mario's success. After all, he made the pick for the Texans and does a upstanding job for NFL Today now. |

No way should DE - Patrick Kerney, Seattle be picked ahead of Aaron Kampman of Green Bay! As usual these so called all nfl teams are subject to rebuttal! |

It's my fault," said first-year Nebraska coach Bo Pelini. "Damn right, yes, I'm embarrassed. I apologized to the team. I apologize to the state of Nebraska. I apologize to everyone associated with Nebraska football. "It's my responsibility. I was hired to do a job and I didn't do the job, I'm just not a very good coach. |

Stumbling? Casserly singularly made the decision to draft Mario #1. He didn't stumble a bit. Much to the chagrin of the Houston faithful and to the astonishment of many of the leagues front office brass. During his four years leading the Texans in the NFL draft, Houston was the only team to draft two Rookies of the Year (Domanick Davis, Dunta Robinson) and two starting Pro Bowlers (Andre Johnson, Jerome Mathis). Stumbling? At the time it really was a LA Clipper 'esque move. The guy stuck his neck out and considering what Vince and Reggie have done, it has paid off for the Texans. |

It was Kubiak and Smith that pushed for Mario Williams.
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/texans/2006-04-30-williams-pledge_x.htm
It's my recollection that Casserly wanted Bush, most of that was speculation at the time, but it would certainly partially explain talks with Bush regarding dollar amounts.
Either way, it's pretty clear the owner gave the cred here to Kubiak. And I think Smith and probably even McNair were heavily leaning toward Williams from the start.
But believe what you want to...he's gone, and the Texans are flourishing fine without him. |

It was Cheney and others that pushed for welfare reform & border control. It was Bush that pulls the trigger. Every Jordan has a Pippen, however when the chips are down the appointed "difference maker" calls the shots. Casserly was solely responsible for drafting Mario. The bottom line is the Texans made the correct call in drafting Williams. But it was a collective decision with Casserly leading the charge. If and when Casserly puts "drafted the next Reggie White" at the top of his resume, he will be engaging in revisionist history. Every decision made on draft day is a collective decision to some extent. In this case it seems that Charley suffered the scrutiny when the decision seemed Sam Bowie-like. Now he should be able to bask a bit and take credit for rolling the dice and proving them wrong again. His decisions for both the Redskins and the Texans drew wide acclaim. |

I never contested it was the wrong move, in fact, quite the opposite. I supported the Williams draft pick from the start. All I am saying is it wasn't his brainchild to draft Williams. The owner clearly gave a ton of credit to Kubiak, and I'll continue believe it's more his credit. Casserly also was responsible for drafting, and continually supporting, David Carr...yet, I don't see you bragging about that. It's not like his overall draft work was a source of genius even if you give him unquestionable, solo credit for Williams. At any rate...that's where I stand. You're welcome to disagree. |

He started out as an unpaid intern under George Allen.
In 1999 NFL Executive of the Year for his masterful draft moves.
On draft day in 1999, Casserly acquired all of the New Orleans Saints 1999 selections, plus their first and third-round picks in 2000 by simply swamping the Redskins' fifth selection in the first round for the Saints' 12th choice. He still managed to obtain the player that Washington wanted, selecting future Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey.
It is easy to toot Casserly's horn because he deserves it. The touch of gold he has. |

John Clayton did a peice about Carr. Talked about how he was the best NFL QB that never got a chance. Claimed Carr's offensive line was subpar for his entire career.
Hey, Casserly also drafted Desmond Howard. So he made his share of mistakes.

I normally agree with John Clayton. Not on that one. No question their line sucked, but when his WR's announce shortly after he is shipping out of Houston that he struggled reading defenses and typically went into passing situations trying to hit his #1 you know there are deeper issues.
Be interesting to see Clayton's take now on Carr...he wasn't impressive in his new home with a better o-line. |

Calculated risk is the game and anyway we shape it, Charley Casserly was one of the best at it.
Rumor is he is now floating his resume around sniffing out another GM job in the league. |

Ok, but I just don't see a ton of calculate risk in those top picks.
Carr was a text book pick by most accounts and you my thoughts on Williams...
I am not saying the guy isn't good. I am saying he isn't anything special. |

In draft circles, I don't know if "textbook" relates. There is nothing textbook about rating players and gambling on outcomes. The Carr-wreck that has been David Carr's career in the NFL has been paved with many details. He still holds the record for being the most sacked QB in league history and I don't think throwing passes into the stands would've changed that total much. He was under seige almost before the ball hit his hands. Could David Carr have done better in a situation where he had a stronger offensive line? Yes is my answer but I don't think he was a #1 pick type of talent with hindsight being 20/20. Mario Williams isn't that special? 2nd year is in the books and it was a whopper. |
