the cubs are only 3 games out in the central and 1.5 games in the wild card. kerry wood is pitching in the minors and appears to be making progress. it would be nice to at least add him to the bull pen. i think lou has something good going this year.

They're playing very, very well, after the horrible start. If they could get rid of Jacque Jones for a legit CF (I think they need another run producing bat -- Torii Hunter??), they could do some damage. They might have enough without such a move. It'll be interesting to see how the ownership transition will affect their ability to add an impact player before the trade deadline.

As for Kerry Wood, why punish yourself? His high school pitcher torched his arm (two complete games in a doubleheader on the same day -- torture!). Then, Dusty Baker finished him off. Cubs fans need to get the names MArk Prior and Kerry Wood electro-shocked from their memories. It's too bad, too, because they could have been as dominant a 1-2 punch as there is in MLB.

After acknowledging that he was desperate, Dwight said "people will resort to saying things they know aren't true when they are desperate." That about sums it up!

Never count on Kerry Wood again. He'll never stay healthy long enough.
I keep waiting for Dempster to flame out and Marmol to be made the closer.

"Perhaps the worst thing that can happen is to reach into the refrigerator and come out with something that you cannot identify at all. You literally do not know what it is. Could be meat, could be cake. Usually, at a time like that, I'll bluff. "Honey, is this good?" "Well, what is it?" "I don't know. I've never seen anything like it. It looks like...meatcake!" "Well, smell it." (snort, sniff) "It has absolutely no smell whatsoever!" "It's good! Put it back! Somebody is saving it. It'll turn up in something." Thats what frightens me. That someone will consider it a challenge and use it just because it's in there." -- George Carlin

The best thing that could happen to the Cubs is Mark Cuban. They've been plagued by a sub-par front office for decades now.

Chicago Cubs had a team that was five outs away from a World Series and they let it be held hostage by the frail arms of Mark Prior and Kerry Wood. Instead of bringing in reliable starters, they sat around and prayed their two young arms would finally stay healthy. Three years of 90-loss seasons finally shook them out of their daydreaming.

i would like to see cuban become the owner. i think he and lou have the ability to start something great. i don't see wood ever becoming a starter again. however, if he can stay healthy for a few more years i think he could be an asset in the bull pen. the cubs need a power hitter. lee and ramirez just aren't producing the hr's they were. they are both producing runs but an hr threat needs to be added to the line up.

only 2 games back. bring the brooms to st. louie.

why do the cardinals have hemmorhoids? because they take it in the pujols.

Well, the Cubs are being the Cubs again. On a losing streak when they could have moved up...why, dear lord, do I burden myself with this team?

CINCINNATI -- If all goes well, Kerry Wood could be pitching for the Cubs sometime during the upcoming homestand.
Wood joined the team Saturday after pitching back-to-back games for Class A Peoria on Thursday and Friday. He's totaled seven innings in rehab outings for Peoria and the Mesa Rookie League team, and passed all the tests.

"I've been feeling good -- actually feeling great," Wood said Sunday. "I think we've gotten over the hump."

The plan now is to pitch for Double-A Tennessee on Tuesday at West Tenn. The Triple-A Iowa team is in Salt Lake City, which is a long trip for a short stint. Wood will pitch in relief on Tuesday, coming in during one inning and then finishing the next.

"Truthfully, I think the next step is here," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "I would think sometime in the Mets series [Aug. 3-5] would be a good timetable. It's good news. That's like trading for a reliever -- like trading for a good reliever at the deadline."

Wood's highest pitch count so far has been 17, and the Cubs would like him to throw a little more. He's throwing fastball, curveball, slider. The radar guns are showing 92-95 mph, which is good.

If Wood can convince the medical staff he's ready, he could be back during the Cubs' homestand, which begins Monday with a four-game series against the Phillies. The New York Mets come to town for a weekend series. The Cubs' success has motivated Wood even more.

"It's been fun to watch on TV," he said of the team. "I've been here sparingly a couple days at a time and it's been fun. The city's excited, the fans are excited, we're excited and we're playing well, and we have a lot of games left and have to keep it going."

It'll definitely be thrilling to see Wood back on the mound at Wrigley Field.

"I'm going to try to control the adrenaline the best I can," Wood said. "It's going to be difficult, I'm sure. [I'm hoping to] just come in, do my job and get the guys out."

Wood has struggled since undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in August 2005. He did make four starts last season, but had to shut down because of problems with the shoulder. He pitched in Spring Training and again had to be shut down because of tendinitis in his shoulder.

This comeback has been somewhat surprising. Wood was close to considering another procedure on his shoulder, which wasn't his first choice.

"I look at it as a second chance," Wood said. "A month and a half ago, I didn't think I'd be talking to you guys, especially about pitching."

That's because about three weeks ago, Wood couldn't throw from 45 feet.

"I was thinking probably another surgery and that could be it, or another surgery and another long rehab," he said. "I wasn't willing to do that at the time. I gave it one more shot and so far so good."

He's heard the comments that he's made a miraculous recovery.

"It was kind of surprising," Wood said. "It was just overnight and unexpected for sure."

Funny how Milwaukee has to copy the Cubs by fighting in the dugout, hoping to break out of their slump. Desperation will do funny things to you. It worked for Chicago -- hopefully, it doesn't work for Milwaukee.

Kerry Wood -- the black cat of MLB -- is coming up today, huh? Best of luck.

the bullpen failed in the top of the 9th yesterday. it doesn't help when your starter gives up 6 in the first few innings. it does help that the brewers and cards lose at the same time. hopefully a sweep can be manufactured against the stupid mets.

let's hear it for will ohman. just as the cubs get within striking distance ohman comes in and gives up runs, again.

congratulations to tom glavine on getting his 300th career victory. he should send ohman a thank you card.

Kerry Wood gets promoted. Soriano tears his quad. The Cubs start losing again.

I'm telling you, the Cubs just have to get rid of this guy. I'm not a big believer in "good luck" or "bad luck", but it is rather eerie.

I still believe the best thing that can happen to the Cubs is Mark Cuban.

As much as I kind of disliked the guy at first he's really grown on me. I still think he acts like a moron at times, but I respect what he's done in Dallas with the Mavs and his passion for winning and understanding of how to run a franchise is exactly what Chicago needs. They've had one of the most dismal front offices in MLB for years. The majority of their problems revolves more around poor decision making rather than any perceived "bad luck".

i think ohman should be cut but if it is just a shoulder problem that would explain his horrible performance of late.

HOUSTON -- The Cubs needed a relief pitcher to give them innings and recalled right-hander Sean Gallagher from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, sending Will Ohman to the Minor League team to make room on the roster.
The Cubs relievers are primarily one-inning type pitchers, and there was no long man. Gallagher, who was called up for the third time this season, was starting at Iowa and was 3-1 with a 2.16 ERA in his last five starts there. He has fanned 22 over 25 innings and walked six.

"Will's done a good job," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. "He hasn't thrown the ball well lately -- it's just an unfortunate part of the job. I have to make a decision based on what's good for the club, and right now we needed somebody, that 12th guy to give us some innings."

Ohman, 29, revealed to beat writers that his shoulder has been "barking" for awhile, and that he was headed to Chicago first to be examined by team orthopedic specialist Dr. Stephen Gryzlo.

"It's been lingering and very frustrating, so we have to make sure everything's right," Ohman said. "The whole point of this is that Jim needs to make a move to help the team today to help the bullpen, and I'm going to do my part to go get right so we can make a playoff run, and that's how it is."

Ohman was 1-4 with a 4.15 ERA in 37 games before the All-Star break, including a 3.75 ERA in 13 games in June. But the left-hander has served up six runs on 11 hits and three walks over six innings in 10 games since the break for a 9.00 ERA.

"I've been trying to get people out and I wasn't getting them out," Ohman said.

For the season, Ohman was 1-4 with a 5.06 ERA in 47 appearances. Last year, he set career highs in games pitched, innings and strikeouts.

The Cubs were not aware of Ohman's shoulder problems until Tuesday, team officials said, and putting him on the disabled list was not considered. Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild did tell manager Lou Piniella that the lefty "needed a couple days off," Piniella said. The team doesn't have that luxury.

"I'm not trying to play hero or anything like that," Ohman said, "but I feel I have the responsibility that if I can compete at the Major League level and help the team, then help the team. When I couldn't any longer, that's when you have to get something taken care of."

Gallagher was glad to be back in the big leagues. The Cubs need a long man, and Gallagher will handle that role.

"I'm just now starting to get into the swing of things and figuring things out," Gallagher said about relieving. "With Mike [Wuertz] and Bob [Howry] and Scotty [Eyre], I'm trying to follow their routine to see what they do to get themselves ready every day."

He's used to watching video, having a side day, getting a little break between starts. Not anymore.

"With relieving, you have to be ready that day," Gallagher said. "[Starting] is the same routine I've always had. Hey, I'm up here to help this team win some ballgames. I'll do whatever they want me to do."

There is a chance Gallagher could be called upon to make a spot start if needed. The Cubs didn't have that type of pitcher before he arrived. For example, Sean Marshall had problems with his eye because of a contact lens and would've been scratched, but the Cubs didn't have a replacement handy.

Even though this is his third stint with the Cubs, Gallagher was still nervous when he got the news.

"I get that little quiver in my legs every time you hear it," he said.

The happiest person to see Gallagher? Carlos Marmol, because now the rookie right-hander can carry the pink backpack filled with gum and candy to the bullpen. Marmol had taken over the duties.

The move leaves the Cubs with one left-hander in the 'pen in Scott Eyre. They began the year with three -- Eyre, Ohman and Neal Cotts. The team is hoping Kerry Wood, Bob Howry, Michael Wuertz and Carlos Marmol can handle lefties as well as right-handed hitters.

The Cubs have even talked about possibly carrying 13 pitchers, and Piniella joked that they could have 15-16 if they wanted on the 25-man roster.

"We just needed somebody to eat up some innings," Piniella said. "We have all one-inning pitchers out there, and you get into a ballgame and it's close or extra innings or a pitcher gets knocked out, and you're running too many of them out there. Put Gallagher out there to eat three, four innings and you can rest your bullpen.

"What we need to do is start hitting the ball and put some runs on the board," Piniella said. "We need to put some runs on the board, and all these other little problems will take care of themselves."
